Like many others here, I don't remember a time that I was not reading or being read to. Evenings were often spent with a book being read aloud, usually by my dad, but sometimes by my mom or an older sibling. When we were sick, we'd often get bonus stories while we lay in bed.
At age ten I read The Lord of the Rings, and at that time I became unstoppable reading wise, cause I felt like I could read anything I set my mind too (which I almost promptly proved myself wrong in, because I didn't make it through the Silmarillion).
Favorite books are hard, so I'll be sprinkling in favorite authors:
- Jane Austen (can't pick)
- C.S. Lewis (Especially the Chronicles of Narnia)
- The Lord of the Rings
- The Count of Monte Cristo
- George MacDonald (Especially the two Malcolm books)
- The Phantom Tollbooth
- Howard Pyle (Can't pick)
- Charles Dickens (especially Bleak House and Tale of Two Cities)
- Ivanhoe
I am sure there are more, but I can't remember right now.
Like I_should_read_more, I am not familiar with that author or that series. However, The Space Trilogy by C.S. Lewis is quite good.
Les Miserables did those little side things all the time. That is probably the easiest book to abridge, cause you just have to take out all the paranthetical stuff.
I write primarily poetry, and sometimes some blogposts. I've given prose writing a shot here and there, but I think the farthest I've ever gotten in a story is 9 pages. So, poetry it is.
Yeah. I grew up MO side of KC (well, one of the smaller cities surrounding) so that might be why I'm possessive. ;)
Unconnected with Barclay, but I love Half Priced Books! Spent $50+ there over spring break, an amount not exactly in my budget....
Ha, I never even think about the fact that it is in both states. I'm in MO.
Hey, someone in the same state as me!
I really hope some strangers take you up on this. Sounds fun. :)
St. Robert, MO.
Nice! I have little time for pleasure reading these days, so quick reads are nice to put in every once in a while.
I've only read Jane Eyre, which I enjoyed. It presents a weird morality question though.
I've had Terry Pratchett suggested to me a few times. About how long are his books? Is The Colour of Magic a stand alone book, or part of a series?
I read The Cross and the Switchblade (autobiographical/religious book) which I greatly enjoyed. I'm working through an audio rendition of the Count of Monte Cristo. I've read this multiple times, quite good. Also reading a Jeeves and Wooster book (Mating Season I think?) by P.G. Wodehouse. Amusing, but really easy to put down, if that makes sense. It doesn't pull one in for long periods, though I find it worth reading.
Eli, you promised us she wouldn't be here, that we were safe to know things. I feel betrayed. Not that I know what betrayal is, Cathie.
I feel like this should be a joke, and not serious. What are Eli's thoughts on his abandonment?
It is officially time for a visit.
That sounds so cool! why don't other people have that? Do you get extra points if you travel in from a different state just for it? :P
