Look at portraits that you want to replicate and try to figure out how they were lit. That might include lights, reflectors, or just the sun (or all manner of combinations). Once you understand that you will have a great base to build your portrait basics on.
I have used the t2i, which is largely the same minus the screen and some video features.
Depending on what your goals and experience is you could probably buy and older camera and not miss all that much from the latest. The difference between the t2i and the t5i isn't massive (canon hasn't largely changed the sensors or abilities of the camera in the last several years).
The t5i is a fine camera though, you won't go wrong with it and it has a pretty long range in terms of experience, skill, and results.
