I knew a 'journalist' who worked for Al Jazerra. She was a business reporter, but knew next to nothing about business or economics, (or really anything about life at all- she is in her late 20's). She was unfamiliar with even the most basic economic theories, although she'd graduated from a highly regarded private university in the USA with a journalism degree. I guess they don't teach econ 101 to journalism majors? Anyhoo- my conversations with her explained much about why I read so many news articles that barely scratched the surface of the issue at hand. And why, in general, our news is so dumbed down. And (while I'm up here on my soap box), why I wasn't surprised by the revelations about Ben Rhodes in the NYT last week. Not surprising that these so called journalists could be played the way that Rhodes bragged of in this article.
