I really enjoyed "An Unfinished Life." While I agree that JFK is overrated (and I understand Kennedy fatigue), he is a fascinating man. His background and family, his machinations for political life, his image and the facade, his blurring of right and left politics, his youth and optimism compounded with his tragic death are irresistible. While he is indeed overrated as President, his life, and Dallek's bio are well worth reading.
I am a big history fan, and while I love presidential biographies I am not one to even attempt to read them in order. I also tend to get sidetracked with other historical events and characters along the way –whether it’s a biography on Hubert Humphrey after reading about LBJ, or recently reading of David Remnick’s biography of Muhammad Ali “King of the World” (which was fantastic). I am a worker side labor lawyer by day, and as a parent with two kids 3 and under, I have much less time to read than before. I try to balance my reading between non-fiction with novels as well as a reading group. Looking forward to this group.
Hands down, my favorite presidential biography or any work of nonfiction is Robert Caro's "The Years of Lyndon Johnson." It is stunning work.
Great lists. From the last 100 years or so, I'd add Eleanor Roosevelt, Dean Acheson, Earl Warren, Richard Russell, Dick Cheney and Al Gore. But the most important in my opinion in last 100 years or so is Martin Luther King, Jr.
