I'm not sure what first inspired me to write, but I remember the drive to write my first book. I was in the gifted program in elementary school and we had a program where we visited a local publisher, wrote our own story (mine was either a fairy tale or had mermaids, possibly both--I can't remember exactly, but it was around when Disney's The Little Mermaid first came out, so take your pick), then had a contest to see whether said story would become a bestseller (we spun a wheel). One of the prizes was a purple phone. A phone! For a 5th grader, that was huge (though keep in mind this was early 90s, so it was touchtone, not touchscreen). And lo and behold, I won that phone, because the girl who had a better spin knew she couldn't take the phone home.
Man, I loved that purple phone. Also, I really liked pink at the time, so the entire story is written (and illustrated) in pink pen.
I have an idea saved in my Scrivener app--it came to me just as I was falling asleep and I geeked out when I realized I neither had to get out of bed to stumble to my computer nor turn on a light because the iPad is backlit (no more unintelligible scribbles on scrap paper!) I wonder if that idea has enough steam for NaNo, though.
