I am no dog expert. But I'd suggest, instead of sticking it in the crate when they don't go, attach them to their leash, attach the leash to you, and then you'll be right there when they need to go. It'll be annoying, but obviously you won't need to do it forever.
There's not a lot of (or any) true solarpunk in novels yet. There's some short story sites like: http://www.solarpunkpress.com/
If you want a comfort fic/optimistic future, I like MCA Hogarth's Mindtouch series. Not Solarpunk, but it has the kind of feel I think a good Solarpunk book might have.

Well, storytelling in a utopia is hard so I don't fault him for it.

The Dinotopian books are the reason I was drawn to solarpunk. I loved them as a kid and solarpunk reminds me of them. :) Not really available on the internet, but good reading. Well, some reading, but mostly amazing illustrations.
You could also do nonfiction books.
