  • Mental IllnessMental IllnessDoesn't pills just make us worse by the side affects or no ?May 23 at 1:57 PM

Congratulations on finding medications that works for you. :-) How long did it take you to find the right ones?

I think your response was on point and that you should keep on doing what you do. :-)

I noticed that you mentioned that you couldn't find the related lecture and so I thought I would try to help by finding the most comprehensive evidence on the subject that I could find. I didn't mean to imply anything else by it. I apologize.

True. On top of that those positive biases exist to make you feel better and enable you to do more things since they reinforce your behavior.

Found this recent meta analysis on depressive realism. The quick summary is that it exists with a small effect which is moderated by whether or not the studies had an objective measure of reality.

It depends on where you're at and how bad your symptoms are. Any treatment, medicine or otherwise, is a cost/benefit decision that you make with your provider. For many people the benefit of medicine outweighs the cost of side effects. I know that I would be dead if not for the medicines I took, even though they had side effects.

  • Mental IllnessMental IllnessKetamine helps patients with severe depression 'when nothing else works', doctors sayApr 06 at 5:46 AM

They've also been doing several clinical trials for a ketamine derived antidepressant. I did a quick search and it looks like they're testing intravenous and intranasal routes of administration for esketamine.

  • Mental IllnessMental IllnessMental illness and working.Mar 27 at 6:32 AM

I'd definitely put a vote in for something technical like a programming job, or something creative like you mentioned in another comment, longer term. Those roles can often be done remotely and you can either work from home sometimes or all the time. I usually work in an office as a software engineer but I've been able to work from home when I needed to. I have friends who work primarily from home.

It's definitely helped with my depression to be able to work from home some days. It allows me to focus my energy on self care and maintaining my financial stability without having to force myself to be presentable or social. It also helps to be home when I'm anxious too. I recover more quickly from anxiety when I don't have to put on a brave face.

  • Mental IllnessMental IllnessAnybody know about giving blood? (specifically with self harm)Feb 22 at 11:24 PM

They do tests on the blood although I can't attest to whether they test all blood all the time.

It sounds like they don't have a rule for when you can't give blood in regards to self harm. If you're sure of the cleanliness of your implements then it should be fine. It's kind of like getting a tattoo. They don't want you to give blood if you get a tattoo at an unlicensed tattooist but a licensed one is fine because they have strict rules around cleanliness that they have to follow.

  • Mental IllnessMental IllnessWhat does a diagnosis mean to you?Jan 31 at 6:51 AM

I like having a diagnosis. It helps me differentiate between stuff caused by my mental illness and things caused by more immediate behaviors. While there is some interplay between the two it definitely helps me to know.

One example was getting diagnosed with panic disorder and which lead me to investigate all the symptoms of panic attacks. My mental model of what a panic attack looked like was wrong. Having that knowledge ultimately lead me to figure out some of the causes of my panic attacks so I could stop them.

  • Mental IllnessMental IllnessReally not wellJan 03 at 2:51 PM

I'm sorry that you are having a hard time and that you're not finding the support you need from your friend.

I've noticed a similar issue with the "not sick enough" stigma and it sucks since it can make you feel like your problems or trauma aren't bad enough to deserve help. That's why I want to call it out now: you deserve to have the support you need.

    What do you need?

I did a quick fact double-check of the whole "hosted in Russia" thing. I got the same results as the source from this article. Looks like it's true. :-/

    I sure hope not.

  • Mental IllnessMental IllnessBreathing techniques in yoga can drive your depression away-says scienceDec 29, 2016 at 6:15 AM

    Thank you for sharing.

One thing to note is that it is a small sample size and needs to be replicated on a larger scale before the claims made in the headlines are true.

Another thing from the article stood out: "The test group is administered with a classical breathing technique called as ‘Sudarshana Kriya’ along with other yoga postures and exercises". If you're doing exercise that's a confounding variable as there's a massive amount of research supporting the benefit of frequent moderate to intensive exercise on depression.

It's good that we're investigating many options for depression treatments.

Welcome to the community Squeak. You don't have to worry about boring people by talking about your issues here, it's part of why this community exists. :-)

  • Mental IllnessMental IllnessAckDec 06, 2016 at 8:55 AM

This is definitely the right spot. Sorry you're going through this. I've been in a similar situation; it sucks. I ended up crying in the doctor's office which eventually resulted in my meds getting refilled. Hopefully your PCP helps you hold over until you see your new doctor.

  • spooniesspooniesSpoonies and work?Oct 02, 2016 at 9:25 PM

I'm a programmer and can confirm that it's not uncommon for a work from home arrangement to work out there. I have one with my employer for days when leaving the house is too difficult.

Fingers crossed on your situation, I hope they let you work from home. <3

  • Mental IllnessMental Illness[CW: Ableism] "The 'Not Sick Enough' Stigma"Sep 28, 2016 at 8:05 PM

I've run into this problem; a lot. When I first started talking about my depression even my doctor didn't believe me. It took some self harm for me to even get into counseling. I'd love to see this stigma erased.

  • Mental IllnessMental IllnessThoughts on the term "broken" in mental illness?Sep 15, 2016 at 7:38 PM

I've used "broken" to describe myself, but mostly when I'm in the middle of a depressive episode. I think for me it's a mark of shame. An indicator of something that I feel I "should" be. Other times its just a nod to the difficulties I face in life. It all depends on how I feel.

  • DepressionDepressionstrugglingAug 17, 2016 at 9:15 AM

When I quit grad school I was out of work for around 6 months. Being unemployed and depressed at the same time sucks. By the end I pretty much lost all standards as to where I'd apply and what kind of compensation I'd take. I did eventually find something and things are going pretty well now. I hope you can find the same kind of opportunity.

I'll be sending positive thoughts your way. <3
