  • In reference to this comic!

If soulmates were ever a real thing, Steve thought, he liked to believe that he already found his.

He didn’t know how else to explain it, after all. How easily he and Tony just clicked the way they did, how right it felt to have Tony by his side. They were only nine, too young to know any better and too young to understand the world and its workings, but.

Steve was sure. He was sure of this, of Tony, of them, and he was going to make sure that Tony knew that.

“Tony,” he said, excitement practically bubbling in his voice as he clutched at Tony’s chubby (and very nice) fingers, “I learned something new today!”

Tony smiled, as he often did around Steve, and Steve smiled a little more widely. Tony asked, “What is it?”

“Ma taught me to make flower rings,” he answered, smiling as he slid one hand into his pocket to reach for the ring he’d hidden there. Once he found it, he brought his hand out and wiggled it a bit as though to say “look at this!” He said, all while holding up Tony’s hand and slipping the ring onto his ring finger, “I made this one just for you. It’s blue because it’s one of your favorite colors, and I think it looks nice on you.”

Tony blushed, and Steve grinned with pride. He could tell just from the shy smile on Tony’s face that he liked it, which was definitely what he was going for. Tony smiling in general was always a nice sight, but Tony smiling because of him was extra special.

Still, it didn’t take long for the shy expression on Tony’s face to fade into a look of curiosity. With his head tilted in question at the ring on his finger, Tony asked, “What’s this for?”

Steve’s practically vibrating when he replied, nigh instantly, “Our engagement, obviously!”

Tony frowned. “Steve,” he said, voice trailing away for a moment before coming back, “we can’t get married. We’re just kids!”

Steve was not deterred, even if Tony was probably right. Tony is almost always right, because he’s so smart, and it can be both annoying but also amazing. (Mostly amazing, honestly. He’s so proud to have someone so smart be his best friend.)

He clutched Tony’s hand to his Iron Man shirt-clad chest, eyes practically sparkling as he spoke, “Let’s get married anyway! Who cares what they say!”

Tony’s frown wavered, yet it remained. “But…”

“The important thing is that we love each other,” Steve insisted, tugging Tony close enough that his own Captain America shirt was pressing against their hands. “My ma said so. And since we love each other, and want to stick together forever, we should get married!”

“Those aren’t the only reasons people get married, though,” Tony said in a matter-of-fact tone, the bridge of his nose wrinkling as he squinted down at his captured hand. “There are tax benefits, and-”

“C’mon, Shellhead,” Steve pleaded, biting back a smile when Tony visibly softened at the nickname. It was a fitting nickname, too; Tony was just as smart, if not smarter, as Iron Man. Steve had loved the comics as soon as he’d come across them, and he knew that half the reason for it was because the superhero reminded him of his best friend. Kind, smart, and devoted to his friends- nothing could describe Tony better.

“I dunno, Winghead,” Tony mumbled, his free hand fidgeting with the hem of his Captain America shirt. “We’d have to ask our parents first, and I don’t think my dad would agree.”

“We’ll have my ma convince him,” Steve said, his usual reply to Tony’s arguments regarding his dad’s strictness.

It took a second or two of Tony chewing on his lower lip and Steve shifting on his feet impatiently before Tony, hesitantly, nodded his agreement to the request.

Steve smiled the brightest smile he could ever smile, before enveloping Tony in a warm and tight hug. “I’ll definitely make you happy, Tony,” Steve whispered in promise, and Tony laughed, squeezing him right back.

Cheeks bright with a flush of happiness, Tony whispered in reply, “You already do, Steve.”

  • ♥♥!! i'm glad you liked it, friend! thank you very much ;;v;; ♥

  • ♥♥♥ ehehehe

im glad you liked it!! thank you for being so sweet ♥

  • aaaaa i'm glad you liked it!!! ;;v;;; <3 same on the headcanon tbh- touch-starved steve + tony is a thing that i love thinking/writing about, bc there are existing valid reasons for such a condition to exist in the both of them. steve having been frozen for so long and missing warmth, and tony with howard's A++ parenting (hAh). also, that is a great idea for another fic!! every other villain goes straight for physical attacks/kidnapping, but one clever villain finds a way to break steve's heart so that he won't even have to try at defeating him in actual battle! [i love angst, im sorry]

  • “Bad day?”

Steve looks up at the sound of Tony’s voice, and smiles. He can’t seem to help smiling nowadays, even at his lowest points; he supposes this is just what happens when you know that you’re loved.

“It was,” Steve admits, leaning up as Tony strokes gentle fingers down his cheek. He takes the hand as it settles to cup his cheek, squeezing softly around calloused fingers while leaning into the warm touch. He adds, fond smile on his lips, “Not so much anymore, now that you’re here.”

“You’re an incorrigible sap,” Tony replies with a huff, and Steve laughs.

    “You love it, Mister.”

Tony rolls his eyes, but smiles anyway. “That I do,” he admits, not once dislodging his hand from Steve’s hold as he sits beside him on the couch. He squeezes his hand a bit, feeling a little more of his warmth seeping into Steve’s skin. Softly, he asks, “Want to talk about it?”

“Not much to talk about,” Steve confesses. He lowers Tony’s hand from his face, before nudging the other man further back into the couch. Once settled, he shifts to rest his head against Tony’s shoulder, breathing out a faint sigh when Tony immediately moves a hand up to run it through his hair. “It’s just,” he lets his voice trail away while trying to grasp at words, “there.”

Tony hums his understanding, the sound sending vibrations from his chest to Steve’s cheek, warming him up a little more. Each point of contact- his cheek against Tony’s shoulder, Tony’s hand over his head, Tony’s lips to his hair- is a bloom of warmth under his skin, and he breathes.

It feels so much easier, having Tony here.

“Tony,” he says, smiling when Tony cocks his head a bit to look at him. He leans further into Tony’s warmth, smile widening when Tony presses another kiss to the top of his head. He says, letting the words go with as much warmth as he could give, “I love you.”

Like magic, Tony’s expression goes from quietly fond to outright heart-melting affection, the smile on his face softening until Steve is nothing but helpless at the look of it. (He swears, if a villain could bottle the kind of feeling Tony gives him with that look, he’d be a goner the moment he stepped into battle.)

“I love you too, Steve,” Tony murmurs, the softness of his voice diminishing none of the heartfelt affection in his touch, his gaze, or his smile.

    He’ll be okay.

They have each other, after all.

  • thank you!! i'm glad you think so ;;v;; ♥

  • ;;v;;; i'm glad you think so friend!! ♥

  • SAME HONESTLY it's the cutest trope aaaaa ;;; and Steve is the stubbornest dude to ever be stubborn, so u better expect that he'll get his man LOL

here's an idea though-- steve was already planning to propose right before tony proposed, so it eventually became a simultaneous double proposal that has them both laughing with so much love for each other bc wow, they should've seen this coming ♥♥ (also, thank you!! i'm glad you like the comic ;;v;;)

  • thank you!! i'm glad you like it ;;v;; ♥

  • THANK U HAHAHA ♥ i appreciate you appreciating this ;;v;;

  • :D :D glad to know that the line worked!! thank you very much ;;v;; ♥

  • Oh boy I love this. So, so much. I read your previous work on the Ghost prompt too, and aaaaaa both are so good. ♥ Your writing style is great! I love how your conciseness doesn't take away the emotional impact of every word. Thank you for sharing your works with us! ♥

  • something inside you broke
when you woke from the ice.

in the depths of your heart, you knew,
but you gritted your teeth, let the world pass
out of a mistaken belief that you could carry
    the world on your shoulders.

    (you lived through sickness,
lived through pain and war and impermanent death,
    didn’t you?

who was to say that you couldn’t live through
    a broken heart?)

you told him that you wanted to protect your friend,
let him believe that you were clinging to a past
    too abruptly taken from you,
and swallowed the bitter aftertaste of a lie
your mother would have never forgiven you for.

(and it was sickening, how the relief
settled deep in the hollows of your bones
that your mother would never know
    how wrong you’ve become.)

it was never to protect him. never to protect either
as it was to protect your own heart,
shattered as it was and held together by
desperate hands and fragile hope found
    in aching lungs.

    you wanted tony’s heart
(fragmented and beautiful and so, so warm)
    to be yours.

you wanted his heart to keep,
wanted far more than you deserved,
in the hopes that it would fill the void
in the space where your heart should be.

    so you lied.

you lied, hoping against hope that the truth would never be found,
that your friend could be saved and tony’s heart could be yours,
that you could have something for yourself
    just this once.

you lied, and you know better
than to swallow the lie yourself
by pretending that you did it for either of them.

when you woke up from the ice,
you knew that something broke inside of you.

you had only hoped that it was just your heart
    and not the spirit
your mother so carefully built with you.
