  • PandasPandasDid you know some wolverines have similar coloration patterns as Pandas?May 16 at 6:18 AM

What's interesting is that they are not taxonomy related other than being Carnivora 🍖 mammals. Wolverines provide a clue as to why Pandas look the way they do! 👀

black and white wolverine, also known as gulo gulos. These are found in colder climates.

brown and dark-brown wolverine from North America

They were born there. They'll be moving in 2018 with adult Pandas Er Shun and Da Mao to the Calgary Zoo. The Calgary Zoo doesn't have any Pandas right now, and got $10M from Alberta (its parent Province) for the upcoming exhibit. They are very excited for it.

Why certain zoos have Pandas and why they are moved around is a rather complex geopolitical story going back about 50 years, so that is better suited as its own topic. Or two.

Fruits and vegetables are nutritionally grouped together. The botanical difference is about what part of a plant they comes from. So things like bell peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, and grains (e.g., rice) are botanically fruits. So they can often work together from a taste standpoint.

Apple juice, in particular, provides a bright sweetness and a bit of acid tartness, so it helps complement the sweet earthiness of the carrot. Carrots are the second-most sweet (nutritional) vegetable after beets. You wouldn't want to use beet juice since you'd be doubling up on the earthiness. It's all about balance. Yin and Yang.

    Pandas is getting hot!

Meanwhile, Pandas are trying to cool off in the summer heat!

  • PandasPandasJust a panda enjoying a popsicleJul 25, 2016 at 3:00 PM

Pandas want to beat the heat like anyone else!

I made a batch of carrot-apple popsicles over the weekend. It is pretty good and tastes exactly like carrots and apples.

It's probably sweetened with something else. My guess would be apples, since they are very common in China. We can taste natural sugars.

I'm amazed we can't yet outnumber the number of wild Pandas out there. 1864 in the 2014 Census.

Once we match the number of Pandas, we can pair up and take them out for ice creams.

It certainly helps them eat bamboo! They pass the bamboo between their fingers and thumb to strip the leaves. Without the thumb they wouldn't be able to eat bamboo as easily! And you know how big a problem that is based on last week's Panda Facts!

I forgot to mention. The thumb exists only on the front paws. Not on the back/bottom two!

I think it's okay to hug Pandas that are comfortable with the situation. Just make sure you have their consent!

Their habitat is shrinking, so Pandas ask themselves which is easier: finding young bamboo or finding pika. Maybe vegans can forgive them since it's our fault!

But yes, Pandas spend 10-16 hours a day foraging and eating. Captive Pandas have a bit of an easier time since they don't have to find food. The rest of the time, they sleep, about 2 to 4 hours at a time between meals!

While bamboo is 50% water, Pandas still need to find water in addition to food. In China they'll drink water from rivers and streams.

  • PandasPandasPanda Facts! Food Edition!Jun 01, 2016 at 1:28 PM

Yes! But very little, and Pandas digest only about 17% of the dry food they eat! So Pandas have to eat 20 to 30 pounds (9 to 14 kg) of dry food daily!

It depends on the season and type of bamboo as well! In Spring, young wood bamboo shoots offer nitrogen and phosphorus. When they mature and lose nutrition in June, Pandas move to young arrow bamboo shoots. When they mature in July, Pandas move to eating their leaves for the calcium! Humans eat certain bamboo shoots and it mostly provides fiber!

Pandas in the wild do eat things besides bamboo, less than 1% of the time. It is usually other vegetation and sometimes small rodents called pika. Pandas ask you not to tell their vegan friends!

  • PandasPandasHave you ever seen a panda in person?May 25, 2016 at 10:18 PM

Yup, most recently Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC. You can look at their webcams.

A long time ago as a child, in San Diego. Unfortunately, this was overshadowed by... an... event... in Tijuana which I do not want to talk about.

My lifelong dream is to ride a Giant Panda from China into outer space while an 80s electro-rock soundtrack is blasting behind me. Giant Panda and Me (Coming Soon to a Theatre Near You) will explore the universe and spread our love to whatever sentient beings we will find. Thus, there will be universal peace, at least until the bamboo runs out.

While I visited zoos, I oppose zoos in general, except for pandas. They're too dumb to survive as a species in the wild. When animal rights PETAvegans take over the world, all that will be left are panda zoos. Mark my words, for I graduated from the Barbizon Cosmetology and Cosmology School.
