  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenWhat group of kids are your "young X-Men"?May 14, 2016 at 7:50 PM

Its weird for me, Gen X was sorta my young mutant team, and I loved them, but in a lot of ways they felt to old to really relate to. Only a handful of years older than me, but thats a huge difference at some ages. When I think about young x-men now, I think about Kitty in the excalibur era. I think about the Yost era kids, and the WATXM crew.

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenFrenzy was one of the X-Men's most believable redemptionsApr 30, 2016 at 1:13 AM

Carey's run more than I think any other writers run on the books was about dynamic forward momentum for character development. He didn't retread old character arcs, but instead developed old and new characters together in ways that created new relationships.

I love Morrison, but a lot of Morrison is kinda doing the x-mens greatest hits done in a modern world with different sorts of prejudice and acceptance.

Whedon tries to create solid x stories with a classic group of character dynamics.

Aaron did a lot of new stuff, but was perhaps a bit to scattered and concerned with over the top hijinks.

Good writers all, and their are plenty more I havent mentioned, but carey seemed to be the one guy who really looked at where the characters had been before, and moved them forward in ways hat made sense for them and furthered their stories as characters, rather than hammering the characters into the stories he wanted to tell, while at the same time managing to throw together characters who hadnt previously had much of a relaionship and have the interact in nuanced ways.

Mike Carey's entire X-run is incredibly under rated. In many ways I think he's the only true successor to Claremont, and his treatment of Frenzy was fantastic.

Enjoyed this so much. Been loving Chris' various podcasts, and really wanted to see soemthing like this after SCOIP.

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenWarwolves of London (and a heads-up re: Episode 103)Apr 04, 2016 at 10:25 PM

No I went and read the issues today. The wynnes pic is great as well.

But Davis makes everyone even villains so likable. Kitty's transformation which could be horrific is practically cute. Everything just looks so perfect.

Why is everything so gorgeous in this comic?

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenThe Threat of X-tinction: Yea or Nay?Apr 04, 2016 at 7:38 PM

Xtinction isn't the real problem in these stories for me. For me the problem is that in a world where there sent new mutants being born the xmen don't need to engage with earth. They could go to space or the savage land or a variety of other places. If they don't have to help new mutants emerging in a world that hates and fears them then they don't have to engage with humanity and can retire to somewhere else

    I loved that story.

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenOT: Teen Titans WastelandApr 02, 2016 at 11:56 AM

Yeah, I'm a big fan. The "What is Aqualad doing" segment might be my favorite part. This current jumpsuit era of Titans seems insane.

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenThe Fox X-men cartoon and the difference between american and japanese animated adaptations.Mar 31, 2016 at 5:30 PM

Oh I agree. Even just trying to adapt the Claremont run would be full of so many problems, let alone once you get multiple books, or once you get post Claremont.

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenThe Fox X-men cartoon and the difference between american and japanese animated adaptations.Mar 31, 2016 at 2:38 PM

Oh yeah, like I was saying, I know from a practical standpoint why we dont do this.

I just wonder how many more people would be reading comics right now if we did.

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenThe Fox X-men cartoon and the difference between american and japanese animated adaptations.Mar 31, 2016 at 11:28 AM

    Not really.

What I'm talking about is the way anime based off manga are exact or near exact adaptations of their comics counterparts, and how much of an in that is for people to get into the comics.

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenYour X-Men DREAM BOOK!Mar 31, 2016 at 1:04 AM

Can I just have Claremont Davis Excalibur back?

I guess if I must have something new....

Kieron Gillen writing a book about Quentin Quire operating a mutant activisism group out of a night club, which is kinda like a constant party that also has adventures.

Maybe the entire Nightclub would be made out of Krakoa, and would actually teleport to the places that hey are having adventures at, kinda like the Tardis, so that no matter what was happening their was always the opportunity for partying.

Kid Omega could construct a mental autopilot that runs his body so people dont realize how seriously hes taking everything, and the quentin auto pilot could start a whole conspiracy that real quentin gets paranoid at and tries to circumvent, and the conspiracty turns out to be that autopilot quentin is just trying to cheer up real quentin.

Id hope it could get a bit naughtier than we usually see in Marvel comics but I admit that that isn't necessarily a great idea, but hey its my dream x-book so I want kinky subtext and a bit of fetish.

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men3/30/16 NEW COMICS OPEN THREAD - SPOILERS IN COMMENTSMar 31, 2016 at 12:39 AM

I will eventually get around to Moon Girl and X-men 92 most likely, but the only thing I've read so far this week is Transformers MTMTE which is usually my fave comic each month, and the final page of this weeks issue re-affirmed that pretty well. Any other mtmte fans?

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenI wrote an article on Pete Wisdom and I have opinions on him!Mar 30, 2016 at 1:44 AM

Pete Wisdom was my introduction to Warren Ellis, an author I've come to utterly love.

I feel like Pete is a bit problematic of a character, but when I first met him as a young teen he was instantly engaging to me. His kind of dark conspiracy laden world, his bitter cynical attitude, it all worked well to contrast against other characters I liked.

I feel like as I've aged and read more of Ellis' work Pete seems less special, but on the other hand, I think some interesting stuff was done with him in the MI-13 books.

I guess I still like Pete a great deal, and I think the hot knives are a fun and visually interesting power. Theres a lot you can do with this guy, you can drop him in a lot of different situations and have him either take charge, or let him play the sort of beleaguered put upon guy.

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenEpisode 102 - Baby Race 2000Mar 28, 2016 at 11:04 PM

I utterly love the N'astirh voice that Jay does.

I never knew the whole thing about Cameron Hodge and Warren. Thats so disappointing.

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenDream X-Men rosters.Mar 28, 2016 at 12:10 AM

You know, I never got the Kitty as teacher to the young original x-men. I dont really feel like any of those guys are people she knew that well. How much time has she ever ever spent with Jean, or Warren.

  • Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenJay & Miles X-Plain the X-MenWhats your favorite forgotten gems?Mar 27, 2016 at 3:59 PM

Yeah, early Gen X was totally my jam as a kid. Still an absolute fave of mine. I enjoyed that above Chamber mini too.
