• ❤It's fun to think about!

  • Perhaps drainage could be improved by putting pebbles at the bottom of the jars, with a screen to keep the soil out.

EDIT: Now you've got me thinking about this... I like the idea that if the jars were clear you could see when there was too much water at the bottom, but the roots wouldn't like the light. What if one put an opaque "label" all the way around the middle of the jar to block light from the roots?

But if the plants got enough sun, algae would probably grow in the drainage area. So that could be a problem.

  • Yep... It started out accidental and then I realized how useful it was!

  • Hi! Oakandsage here. I'm in SoCal, but in the inland mountains so we have one or two light frosts most years. I live in a small rental house on my landlady's farm, where I benefit from an unlimited supply of free horse manure,. In the past I've grown tomatoes and garlic along with whatever other veggies I can convince to sprout; last year I started a small orchard with my landlady's permission, and we're so happy with it I've been gradually expanding it.

  • I don't exhaustively journal everything, but I keep notes on things I'm specifically interested in. And I take a lot of photos, which means it's easy to go back through and go "my last photo of tomatoes from last year was in october" or look through all my garden photos from early april of the past few years and see what's changed, or note how fast my fruit trees are growing.

I'm keeping fruit counts on my fig trees for the first couple years, but I plan to stop once the count is "lots."

  • They certainly look Cavendish-y. I'm not sure what other banana variety has that distinctive shape. Most of the others people grow around here are smaller and blunter.

  • Yeah, the drainage would concern me, especially since those herbs can grow large and have extensive root systems so they'd probably reach the bottom of the jars pretty quickly.
