And 2016 continues to uphold its record as the worst year ever...
We love you anyway, Dan!
If this is all a simulation, where's the reset button?
considertheravens: have you given up on this community? I notice I've been the only one posting. I will drop out if this community is dried up.
Beautiful temples. Great food. Not the U.S.
I can't seem to upload my photo. Tried dragging it, but didn't quite work.
This was very helpful -- thanks!
Yay! Congrats. Looking forward to the future with Imzy.
Thanks. I'll check these out.
I agree that the red line can be a helpful pointer. We all make mistakes in our writing sometimes.
As an editor and writing coach, I just want to urge folks to NEVER depend on any sort of spell check. Always proof your writing a couple times before publishing.
Zoketsu Norman Fischer (Everyday Zen) discussed 3 "parts" of Buddhism: "Classical Buddhism says that practice consists in three studies or three parts. One part is meditation, one part is ethics or morality, and one part is wisdom. These three studies are like the three legs of a tripod, that all need to be developed equally in order for the vessel to stand with stability. Morality calms and clears the mind from the agitation that comes with shoddy conduct."
Whenever a religion (or practice, or philosophy) gets translated to another culture, it will be transformed to some degree by the receiving culture. In China, Thailand, Japan, etc., it seems that Buddhism has been overtaken by tradition and rote practice. In the U.S., capitalism is a very strong force that tends to subsume (monetize?) everything. To deal with that, we need a strong ethical base to go with meditation practice. I think that's why some Buddhist groups in America are now developing social justice programs.
I love what you are saying here ... that "a good definition of harassment will force people to articulate their positions." I don't mind people saying "fuck that" or whatever, when they are truly upset by something. But if you really care about an issue you have to move beyond spewing to clarify what you mean and enter real discussion without descending into abusive behavior.
I REALLY appreciate you and yr staff continuing efforts to try to understand and grapple with this issue! Thank you!
If it wasn't for the anti-harrassment stance, I wouldn't be on Imzy. As long as there have been human communities, there have been standards of behavior, and in the most successful communities (in my opinion), rudeness and bullying are not tolerated -- and for good reason. It's just common sense. People who think they can make a space for EVERYone including toxic, destructive people, have lost their understanding of what community is.
Unbelievable. arrgh!
Good luck!
Just wanted to say thanks for the tip to try Pomodoro. I used it every day last week and was incredibly productive!
In the popular usage of the 60s it meant " bullshitting" and telling tall tales. "Ah, you just shuckin' and jivin' me, man."
Great -- so it looks like you have some experience. I haven't consciously lucid dreamed for some months now (although I "accidentally" did it a couple weeks ago). I'm trying to get myself in the mode again, so it happens more often.
You have to condition your mind to it. There are a lot of ways. It's best to have a practice of recording your dreams in a journal as soon as you wake up. This sort of primes the pump, and creates a stronger connection between your awake self and your dreaming self. Then I usually just affirm to myself every night before sleeping that I will wake up in the middle of a dream. It might take a week or two, but sooner or later it'll happen. (There are a lot of other methods-- check any of the good lucid dreaming books). When you wake up, look at your hands briefly to see if they change shape (clear sign that you're dreaming, and also a way to stay conscious). It's also a good idea to have some "place" in mind where you want to go, or something you want to do. If you don't have an objective, sometimes you'll get distracted and waste your "time," or you'll lose consciousness and start dreaming. If you feel like you might be losing consciousness, spin your dream body around; for some weird reason, that always keeps you awake in the dream state (this has been confirmed in many books on lucid dreaming).
I just finished editing a nonfiction book about someone who was receiving treatment for a serious illness and in the process had to have several steroid treatments. Went through an almost Jekyll/Hyde thing every time. I've experienced something similar but not so bad.
This being Imzy, I didn't curse or get nasty. but I did "heart" yr response.
The other thing to consider is that each person has their own best ways (usually multiple, overlapping) of learning. I'm very text/visual oriented, and I like to write in the margins of books or in a notebook while learning. The writing by hand helps me "anchor" what I learn in a physical way. Watching/hearing the video then helps to reinforce (for me). For others, auditory may be primary, and being able to see physical gestures of the teacher also reinforces meaning.
I think you need both. Books provide the basic knowledge; video reinforces with visuals and sound.
