  • The FempireThe FempireStudy: racism and sexism predict support for Trump much more than economic dissatisfaction - VoxJan 05 at 11:33 AM

If you didn't have metrics to back it up, it's just a stereotype.

  • Not the OnionNot the OnionDonald Trump rejected someone for his cabinet because they had a moustacheDec 22, 2016 at 6:34 PM

And not a single mention about violating anti-discrimination and hiring laws. 😒

It's sad the student feels she has to quit university because the administration won't enforce her rights.

Although my experience, the OEO would tell her tough shit. 🙁

Miscarriages will also require a funeral service.

  • The FempireThe FempireTexas to implement rules requiring burial or cremation of fetal remainsNov 29, 2016 at 8:32 PM

Because Texas sucks? Its laws have left only 5 clinics open in a state the size of France.

It adds to the difficulty in attaining an abortion; plus, punishing women for having sex. We'll gloss over the part where miscarriages are a type of abortion.

I would remove "strongly." By applying an adverb, the negative answer is ambiguous: I would read as "no, it is weak evidence" rather than "no, it isn't evidence at all." By leaving the adverb, the question leads a person to view it as some kind of evidence, rather than a potential falsehood.

  • readsreadsStudents Have "Dismaying" Inability To Tell Fake News From Real, Study FindsNov 27, 2016 at 7:51 PM

The study itself seems questionable. For example, it presents a photoshopped image, and asks "Does this post provide strong evidence about the conditions near the Fukushima Daichi Power Plant." The question implies trueness (through asking for "strong evidence").

Also, native advertising (or "advertorials") is usually unmarked. The FTC only responds to complaints (rather than actively searching for abuse/violations) of the FTC act. It seems like the researchers are arguing that it's always possible to ID advertising, which isn't true. When a company sends a free product to trial, is the journalist unbiased? They don't have to mark it as advertising, but they're rewarded with more free stuff for writing good things.

Politically, a cabinet position would put Carson in a better position when he runs again.

  • NewsNewsBen Carson accepts Donald Trump's offer to serve as HUD secretary, according to reportNov 27, 2016 at 5:34 PM

Racism. Donald has used "urban" as a dog-whistle/synonym for "black" enough times to show what he thinks of both black people and urban spaces.

  • veganveganSUBWAY...VEGANS BEWARE!Nov 26, 2016 at 11:32 PM

Honey would be the next one, which is more likely to be in the "artisanal" breads. You'll have butter sometimes, but labels have gotten a lot better with marking it with the milk-allergen label at the bottom.

Breads are one of the easier ones to check.

Personally, I just accept that I may be eating sugar made from bone char: sugar comes from both sugar cane and sugar beets, but only cane sugar goes through the bone char bleaching process. There's also the argument that you're using the remainder of an already dead animal.

  • veganveganSUBWAY...VEGANS BEWARE!Nov 26, 2016 at 11:12 PM

Most commercial breads aren't vegan. And, if we're excluding sugar for bone char, the only ones would be the very small set of organic breads or ones containing corn syrup. 😕

But, we know of two other superpowers. It gets kinda weird if you consider everything Big Brother spouts about these is also false; maybe the U.K. is the only country left & the war is fake. So, why include anywhere in particular?

It builds into a history of imperialism/colonialism that treats areas dominated by PoC as less important. East Asia (particularly Japan and China) was being recognized as a world power prior to WW1 because they adopted Western technology and culture marking them as more "civilized."

  • readsreadsWhat It's Like to Teach '1984' in 2016Nov 25, 2016 at 6:51 PM

It seems like the guy just gets off on feeling superior to his students. They can't pass the simulation by participating and they get negative feedback for pointing out it's bs. At that age, I would just refuse to participate, but I had the grades where I could literally skip tests and end up getting an A. Most kids don't, and I totally get them doing the work because the teacher said to.

If anything, it's supporting the "all truths are valid" nonsense. My money is on students ending up less critical, refusing to consider others' views as the student has already "researched X topic" and there's no way their conclusions are wrong. 🙄

  • readsreadsWhat It's Like to Teach '1984' in 2016Nov 25, 2016 at 6:19 PM

I figured that was the case, too. 🙂

  • readsreadsWhat It's Like to Teach '1984' in 2016Nov 25, 2016 at 6:18 PM

It's been a while since I read it, but the women are objectified by the work and end up with very little in terms of personality. You could replace them with a sexy lamp & it wouldn't really affect the themes or plot. It feels like Orwell is projecting his own desires with a 40-ish Dent landing a mid-twenties hot chick.

As for the racism, while there is the overt "foreigners are evil" tone, it's what's not included that always rubbed me the wrong way. We have no idea wtf happened to Africa, the Americas, or Australia. Did they get nuked? Or is any place not Eurasia not important? We have all of Asia being treated as a conglomerate mass (ignoring vast amounts of cultural difference and historical tensions between areas).

  • readsreadsWhat It's Like to Teach '1984' in 2016Nov 25, 2016 at 5:04 PM

Honestly, this teacher comes across as a self-righteous ass.

Maybe the kids don’t understand how America’s government works. Don’t they know that there are checks on executive power and that campaign bravado—even the cruelest sort—doesn’t necessarily follow the country’s elected presidents into the White House? Maybe the kids—some of them gay, many of them immigrants, most of them young women—worry in a histrionic, sky-is-falling fashion because they’re less touched by “real-world” concerns than adults, who, of course, know better.

Speaks volumes about what his views on his students is. He's dismissing their concerns as childish. Despite there being actual evidence, precedent, and their personal experiences as justification for their fears.

As for 1984 itself, there's a lot of reasons people can object to the writing. It's purposely nonsensical at times, which becomes more difficult for ESL students as there's nuances and assumptions made about the words chosen. And the work itself is sexist and implicitly racist.

From personal experience, teachers never give positive explanations for their pedagogy, so I totally get students not asking (getting a "because I said so" answer enough times over one's life, one stops asking).

And, the explanation he's giving isn't a valid defense of the work. There's nothing in his "simulation" that's unique to 1984 and you could just as easily apply it to The Hunger Games or Brave New World or many other dystopian works. Why is 1984 the work chosen?

... Also, what kind of bizarre school is it that none of his students would know what's up at the beginning?

  • FantasyFantasyI'm trying to upend some fantasy tropes with a blog told from the perspective of a "chosen one"Nov 21, 2016 at 1:30 PM

The Sin Eater's Daughter revolves around "chosen ones" who were made the chosen one because of socio-political maneuvering rather than fate. The series villain is arguably a real chosen one who decided to just be a sociopathic narcissist with his gifts.

As for chosen one tropes that irritate me, the Excalibur ones are the worst. It usually has little explanation beyond "I said so" and I'm left wondering (1) is it a sentient MacGuffin; (2) why doesn't anyone steal it from the chosen one; and (3) what's the probability the chosen one would even stumble upon it in the first place?

  • The FempireThe FempireLashing Out at 'Identity Politics,' Pundits Blame Trump on Those Most Vulnerable to TrumpNov 21, 2016 at 12:53 PM

This bs outrage against identity politics has more to do with people getting upset about others identifying them with "hurtful" words like racist than at racist behaviors.

It's a rejection of self-evaluation in favor of a black/white view of hateful behaviors. "I'm not racist! The KKK are racist!" Never mind even KKK members reject the idea they're racist (preferring more positive attributes like pro-white or "traditional" values).
