There was me, being all cynical & thinking they'd photoshopped it!
With a sky so beautifully blue, I was expecting the library to be somewhere outside the UK, lol!
Takes a bit of getting used to - on the mobile site there's a little red dot in the top menu bar to tell you something's happened...
I do most of my general web-browsing from my phone these days to try & stop me getting distracted from writing!
Just came across this piece on For Books Sale & thought it might be of interest: http://forbookssake.net/2016/08/22/memoir-writing-crystal-jeans/
Interesting piece - though a week ago I wouldn't have known what half those terms mean!
I agree that "crime" is rather a strong word for what appear to be personal preferences. Even if a majority of people would agree with them, they are still preferences, and subject to the vagaries of fashion through time. A crime, otoh, would be using a typeface one does not have permission to use...
I love the term "Schroedinger's orientation"! That's an awesome description :-D
Some good ideas here. I'd add that you need to bear in mind the genre of your work & a cover artist's familiarity with the genre. A good cover artist might need to charge more for working in a genre they're unfamiliar with simply from the extra time it would take to research. As an example, in romance fiction you tend to get a lot of trends, and an artist who works in the genre will know which trends are up & coming, which are getting a bit tired, and probably have a lot of ideas immediately to hand on how to make your cover stand out without looking out of place.
If you already have an idea of what elements you want in the cover & just require someone with the skills & resources to bring it into being, however, you probably don't need to worry so much.
Further thought: consider whether you're in need of an ebook or print cover (or both!) as they have different demands and again, artist's familiarity with the medium is inportant. You can't assume everyone's ok with everything.
(Sidenote: as your question was for recommendations of cover artists, this is all information which really should be included in your query if you're looking for people to offer names. This is why you've mostly received general info about "Try looking here" rather than "x is really good")
PS (last thing, I promise!) Review sites for some genres will list the cover artist as part of the book info, so looking up this info for books you like the look of could be a good starting point
Interesting to look back on this time. I was a teenager at the time of grunge & didn't realise how much of a rebellion these typefaces were - but images such as the album covers & film posters featured in this article woke my interest in design.
Also interesting the quote about saying "I love you" in Helvetica. My reaction was, "yes, but say it in something like Morire and it bleeds from the heart!"
Perhaps it's just because of the age I am, but this kind of typography always kicks off a strong emotional reaction for me.
(Apologies for being late to comment, am new to imzy)
Like all clothes, lingerie doesn't have to be your thing. And not all lingerie is the same. I love some types of lingerie, and when I sort out space & time, I plan to learn how to make some simple pieces for myself. But!
Omg, I really used to feel completely opposite to this! Lingerie in the mainstream media & the high street (& in western society generally) is portrayed as something one wears to please a partner, when it feels so much sexier if you're wearing it to please yourself.
And there is a huge, huge difference between quality lingerie from an independent or boutique brand, and mass-produced lingerie (which like a lot of mass-produced clothing has corners cut to keep costs down).
If you want to learn more about lingerie outside the high street, I recommend starting with the blog The Lingerie Addict, and working out from there - Cora has links to loads of wonderful lingerie bloggers with all different tastes, interests, and body shapes. I also, personally, like to keep up with the brand Kiss Me Deadly (fantastic imagery), and the online retailer Bluestockings Boutique (motto: "underthings for everyone", owned & run by a queer woman)
Sorry, a bit long, lingerie is something I've got interested in just these last few years, and I do tend to get enthusiastic because there's so much bad info out there...
...but in conclusion, of course: if lingerie is not your thing, that's totally ok, and there are loads of other people who feel the same :-D
I mentioned it in reply to a message I had asking for feedback, and received a lovely message back with a link to this super-useful post: https://www.imzy.com/imzy/post/introduction_to_imzys_flavour_of_markdown_1
It appears I'm simply out of date! Probably worth bookmarking that post for future reference, lol
I know! So confusing, lol.
I always emote or action with asterisks. I'm gonna have to learn something new... Hmm... I think way, way back in the days of my first venturings onto the internet (on a BBS), one emoted using ^e I wonder if ^ is defaulted to anything)
Does seem slightly odd that a single asterisk turns eveything italic. Need an easy way to do footnotes!
(I should really go say some of these things in the imzy community rather than here, lol)
Sounds like Twitter can be :-D Or FB, even...
Wow, I'm in awe of your organisation!
I've started trying to track this sort of information so many times, but it always ends up being one of those things which just gets left to do "tomorrow", in favour of more important things (like eating & sleeping, lol)
Hello :-) I was very pleasantly surprised to see a familiar avi when I first started exploring this site :-) Don't know if you know me under this name, but I used to be tiggothy at LJ
Interesting to hear you see Rey as ace. I came out of SW:TFA seeing Poe as ace, and was utterly baffled by how many people immediately shipped him with Finn... even though I'm notorious for watching things with my slash goggles on, I didn't see any subtext between Poe & Finn. Maybe a bit of proto-hero-worship from Finn's side, but Poe seemed to just want to be good friends with everyone (without any added 'nudge-nudge-wink-wink')
I love "monoganormative"! Sounds like a fabulous word :-D
I'm still really confused by the whole differences between romantic & platonic attraction but reading up on various definitions & descriptions of aromantic experience has made me realise that it's not "because I'm odd" that I see relationships differently to most people in western society, but more likely that I'm somewhat aromantic, even though I'm allosexual.
Apologies for commenting without being able to answer the OP's question...
Ok, I'm really going to have to change how I type things to get the formatting right here, aren't I? roflmao
oooh! 's made it italics! That's a bit old school, isn't it! (actually, thinking back to the 1980s, I'm pretty sure the word processor we had used '/' either side for italics, and '' either side was bold - underline was obviously '_' either side)
waves hello
I still have no idea what 'reblogging' is, but I think I'll find it easier to learn here, where so much else is mor familiar to me (I never understood tumblr, lol)
