• I finally saw both SS and BvS this past weekend. I honestly don't know why the internet is so upset about these movies! I thought they were both awesome!

Suicide Squad in particular was just a bunch of fun. Loved Margot Robbie as Harley, thought Will Smith did fine as usual. Not quite as good as the height of his '90s action stardom, but still fun to watch.

The story was a bit shallow, but I kind of expected that for a team-up movie of a bunch of unestablished characters. If they continue to develop these characters in other movies, I think the next Suicide Squad movie (assuming there is a next one) would be able to have a deeper story.

I also really liked Leto's Joker. I can understand why others don't, but I thought he played the part well. I thought he was treading the line between sanity and madness very well, especially (spoilers, I guess) in the scene where he dives into the tub after Harley. I loved his laugh in particular, it sounded like one of those old carnival game clowns or something. I do wish they hadn't cut most of his scenes, though. I think the additional screentime would have gotten more people to like the performance, but we'll see when the DVD comes out I guess.

  • I hope you know how hard it is for me to not spoil things for you guys... There were certain parts where I was screaming "Oh just wait until the next 50 pages!" in my car.

  • Hi everyone! Bit of a late-comer here.

My name is James, I live in the currently-sunny-but-we'll-see-how-the-day-goes Utah.

Like many of the people here, I've been hooked on fantasy/sci-fi essentially since birth. With books, it's mostly the fantasy and in movies I tend to prefer sci-fi, but there are good examples of each in either medium. I just think it's easier to get sci-fi right in film than it is for fantasy, but that's a discussion for another day.

I feel like I'm retreading a lot of the ground people here already covered, but fantasy has shown me what the world can be, specifically what people can be. If all of us tried to be as good of people as some of the fantasy icons, then the world would be a better place. Of course, some of the lessons fantasy tries to teach us may not be realistic, so like Craig said, gotta be discerning in what you internalize, but there's enough examples of poigniant life lessons from fantasy stories that there should be enough to shape you into a pretty decent person at the least.

If I were to list all of my favorite fantasy, we'd be here all day. But I'll try to keep it to the highlights.

    • Brandon Sanderson (I could talk about the intricacies of the Cosmere for days)
    • The Lightbringer Saga by Brent Weeks
    • Animorphs (it totally holds up guys!)
    • Star Wars

Anyhow, looking forward to getting to converse with all of you!
