Which airports have good bookstores?

  • airport lounge

I haven't come across one yet. Airports in the UK default to WH Smith which is the definition of bland, unless there's something I'm missing. Anyone been to a good one yet?

In Oregon, a selection of used books is mixed in among the new ones at the Powell's Books in Portland International Airport. Headquartered in downtown Portland and known as the largest independent used-and-new bookstore in the world, Powell's has three branches at the airport: one in the pre-security Oregon Market area and smaller outlets on Concourses C and D.

According to store manager Martin Barrett, travelers can stop by the main (pre-security) store anytime to sell or trade up to three books at a time, but anyone with more than three books to sell or swap must drop them off and return a day or two later for a tally. "A lot of airport employees and airline crewmembers take advantage of this," says Barrett, but if a passenger shows up with a suitcase full of books to swap, that's fine too.

Oh, man, that sounds perfect! Powell's is fantastic, I haven't been to the airport location because we road-tripped up there, but there's always a great selection of stuff and a good mix of new and used books.

Singapore airport has fancy everything else, and three bookstore chains, including one store devoted especially to "self-motivation, health and business". I haven't been to the Singapore airport yet, so I don't know how good they are, but, like, you can go read in the airport butterfly garden, in an airport swimming pool or while having your feet nibbled on in airport fish foot baths, so...

Milwaukee's Mitchell Airport has a branch of Renaissance Books. It is an independent bookshop with new, used, and rare books.

Damn, I'd love for airports near me to have quality bookshops like that. I think, think Treviso might have one post refurbishment but I haven't flown from there in a while.
