Everything New About Android From Google I/O

Today at the annual Google I/O developer conference, we finally learned about all the updates coming to the latest version of Google's mobile operating system, dubbed Android O for now-at least until its official release later this year.

I downloaded the beta as soon as it was available:

Things I'd noticed before this article:

The notification dots and their hold to reveal info (thanks to Twitter and Imzy).

image-1495121392871.png This is a feature I could get used to, especially the hold to reveal. I'm a big fan of the long press shortcuts that were added in Nougat, and this is a handy extension of that.

    The ability to snooze notifications.

I don't know how often I'll use this, as I either get most notifications or dismiss them immediately. But I can think of a few corner cases.

    The overhauled/simplified Settings screen.

I got a bit lost digging around in the settings to see what was there. It's mostly the same stuff as before, just grouped differently, so it's more compact, and oddly, more logical.

    The speed improvements.

Android O is fast on my Pixel. Nougat seemed plenty fast, but app switching and screen splitting apps like Youtube and Imzy used to cause it to stutter. Not so much on O.

Things I hadn't noticed before this article:

    Notification Channels

I don't know that any of the apps (aside from possibly GMail) are supporting these yet, or if they are, I haven't figured out how to manage them.

    PIP

This is something Apple has had for quite a while, and I've done the same sort of activity (keeping a video running while doing something else) with Screen Splitting (long press on Task Switch). I can't seem to get PIP to work with YouTube (or any other app), but it's beta, so that's to be expected. I'll try some of the work arounds later.

Things I'd noticed that aren't in the article:

    Font changes

There's some tweaks to the fonts throughout the UI. Roboto seems a little taller and more narrow. It was a jarring at first, but the surprise has mostly faded. I still notice it, though. You can see it in some of the above screenshots.

    Screen Transitions

There's a bunch of new transition effects that I've noticed, though I don't know what makes the system decide to trigger specific ones. There's this really cool one that almost looks like the last active window is being disassembled into it's component panes. I'd love to set that as the default, but there doesn't appear to be any way to do that.

Things I'm not sure I'm noticing, or if they're just a matter of correlation

    Battery Life

My battery is draining fairly quickly. I don't know yet whether that has anything to do with Android O, or if it's the more likely culprit of me not being able to stop poking around with my phone. Constant screen time = faster battery draw. I expect there will be a good number of people doing thorough analysis of what's actually going on.
