Constructive and Passionate discussion about anime and anime culture.
Anime growing up?
What were the anime that impacted you the most as kid or a teenager when you growing up? I’ve just reflecting how certain books, movies and shows have changed my life in a way during that period and for me, I think for I would have to pick Howl’s Moving Castle and Toradora! I loved the characters and narratives for both so much!

What a great post, @Gauchosolo!
I originally saw anime on TV without realizing they weren't western cartoons. Other than Pokémon/Yugioh etc, I specifically remember G Gundam, and DBZ.
Then, when I first had internet access, my goal was to find and rewatch those shows from when TV. This process led me to stumble upon the rest of anime. My first shows were, in order:
Saaame, but my internet start was Youtube subs of Naruto, then Black Cat.
This will only solidify my status as an oldtaku, but the original Oh My Goddess OAV series kind of changed my life, since I was a nerd college student with a motorcycle JUST LIKE KEIICHI.
I was a teen right before there was a TON of anime easily accessible. I think my formative ones were Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Sailor Moon, and Gundam Wing.
Card Captor Sakura - few anime was available to me as a child other than what was on the national tv channels - digimon, pokemon, yugi-oh, and ccs. CCS was something I looked forward to a lot, and something I put time aside for (I remember one summer where a CCS movie was playing, got v excited for it).
It was very pretty to look at, had magic and cool characters. Plus, it was easily available to me as a kid.
Teens were a different story, so much anime and manga in that period, in comparison to when i was younger
Pretear, Inuyasha, and OHSHC were the first three anime I ever watched. I watched them when I was little and I didn't really watch much anime afterwards, but I met some people who had seen them and they suggested more anime to me and I got more and more into anime and stuff and basically that's why I'm so addicted rn lol
i'm very glad that Ouran was part of my early anime exposure. that show was hilarious, especially because it didn't take itself seriously -- which was something most other shows fell victim to.
Ikr and the amount of times they broke the fourth wall it was awesome
I grew up in the 80s and 90s, there wasn't a lot of anime around then. But Astro Boy and Mysterious Cities of Gold were two of my favourite shows and were really significant for me. As an older teen I really enjoyed Evangelion, Akira, and Ghost In The Shell, and they got me to be seriously into anime. One Classic Anime of that period I never got into was Sailor Moon, I thought it was silly, but I've gotten into it as an adult and I was missing out!
have you seen SMA, sailor moon abridged? it's a parody on youtube by Megami33
I have not, but a friend keeps reccing it to me!
The only anime I watched growing up was the stuff that was mainstream enough to be on with the morning cartoons. Pokemon, Digimon and Sailor Moon, basically.
Mysterious Cities of Gold is the only one that was readily accessible to me growing up, so that.
Maybe I should also mention the Daicon III promo short-- I only saw it once, when I was very young, but it really stuck with me!
