Standing ovations used to mean something. Now people give standing ovations for every fucking thing. You got a standing ovation? Doesn't matter. So did everyone else who has ever done something in front of other people.

So who is irking you more right now - ovators or ovatees?
Ovator. That's the whole point.
I get what you're saying, though. Should I be pissed that what I just watched was mediocre? Or should I be pissed that people are giving a standing ovation for it?
Now you have me thinking.
I guess my point is that regular shit should not be treated as if it's incredible shit. I'm not that mad that I watch regular shit all the time. Not everyone can be Fred Astaire. Clap, cheer, or whatever. But don't stand up just 'cause someone has a mic and decides to talk, you know?
It's not groundbreaking shit! Sit down! 😣
I understand your annoyance. Mediocrity seems to be triumphing everywhere. People seem not to know the difference between ok and extraordinary. The Dunning-Kruger effect all over.
Still, I rein in the urge to be annoyed. I have experience on the stage with world class virtuosi for whom the applause is all a bit of a 'meh' moment. Standing or not. They just get on with their work. But then this experience is contrasted by pretty ordinary stagecraft elsewhere. Say, in educational settings, where I want to be super encouraging of learners.
So I scale my expectations to the setting. A wild cheer in one place is not the same as a wild cheer in another. Like for instance, the Alitalia flights I've been on where the passengers stand and cheer for the pilot after the plane has landed and finished taxiing. :)
Alrighty. :)
I lol'd at this for 2 reasons - 1, I completely agree; and 2 - I once got a standing o- for making a left turn in a van full of fellow college students. (I shit you not.)
😂😂😂😂😂😂
clear evidence that the riders hadn't been thrilled with the previous driver =)
But totally overreacting! A standing ovation? Really?! 😐
other driver was really really bad? i dunno... i just thought it was funny that they legit applauded (and a couple stood up in the van) just b/c i made a completely smooth left turn in a huge van... i just kept driving... while the professor/adviser tried really hard not to also giggle - tryin' to keep it professional over in the passenger seat, he was.
I hate how true this is.
I just finished watching Jim Gaffigan's "Cinco". Guess what the audience did at the end.
This is such a weirdly specific post, and everyone replying is acting like it's true, but I've never seen anything like this... Is there a joke I'm missing out on?
There is no joke you are missing out on.
High praise given for mediocre or even just normal things is absolutely nothing new, specific or unique.
That said, I have to ask: are you a serial standing ovator? 😅
Nnno? The only standing ovations I've given were at the very end of plays.
::shrugs:: okie dokie. :)
Watch Jim Gaffigan's "Cinco".
