What's your job?
As the title says. Don't give away too much information, but I'm curious what people on this site do to earn money.

As the title says. Don't give away too much information, but I'm curious what people on this site do to earn money.
I am retired and I make shitty YouTube videos that people seem to enjoy.
How's retired life treating you? What's an average day like?
Hi. I am one of the happier people. My day is usually eating, sleeping, going to Russian Baths, hanging out with my wife of 45 years, seeing my kids and their kids. Happy is the way to say it. It is free and everyone has some of it built in to their chamicals!!! I think. Not sure.
I sit in a little room looking at 5 computer screens, each one has up to 12 peoples hearts beating displayed on it. I answer inane phone calls about the different heart beats, and, more often then I like, I call people (Nurses, sometimes doctors)to get them to check on a patient because I saw something wonky on my screen. I work nights and it always makes me laugh when people say "How do you stay awake sitting there looking at a computer all night? I am watching 60 peoples hearts! I am on the phone on average 35% of my shift! I have trouble going to sleep after work! There is a lot more to my job, but that is the short version in non medical nerd english.
Wow damn. Thanks for looking out for everyone.
It is a good paying job, very nice benifits and days off, I work with good people. It is stressfull, but the perks balance out the bad parts. Thanks for the positive comment!
I'm a valet and bellhop at a ritzy four-star hotel.
I'm the copy-editor for a suite of popular websites that offer stories sent in by people from around the world.
That sounds way interesting!
It is interesting and a lot of fun. I get to beat up grammar and take its lunch money.
Code monkey.
I tried that for a while, HATED it! Much respect to someone who can stand doing that for a living!
When I do something else, I become a grumpy pants.
Grumpy pants are bad! we must keep our pants happy!
I assume you are aware of the song/video of the same name? If not, check it out, Very true to our people!
Yes, I do like tab and mountain dew too!
Don't we all? I think it is genetic, it is on the same gene chain as the one that lets us think in if loops!
I'm an infant teacher at a daycare/preschool.
My MUCH better half is an infant toddler teacher, I volunteer on days off to help out. Hard job but very fun, sometimes.
I honestly love my job. If it paid more I would do it for the rest of my life. Also going to school for social work and hoping to work with early intervention one day
I have to agree 100% with the pay comment. I worked at a Head Start as I was going to school, I loved that job. I would still be there if it paid even 3/4 what I earn at my current job. Sadly, it does not.
What do you do now?
I install underground cables for a telecommunications company.
Are you a contractor? What's the etiquette on offering tea or coffee to you guys when you come out to someone's house? Is it weird?
I tend to work with the connecting cable from the exchanges to the distribution points so I am not customer facing. My understanding is that the guys that visit properties work to a pretty tight schedule though.
I'm a data analyst - operational metrics for a call centre.
Do you check things like employee performance? That sounds like a really interesting and esoteric job.
Yes indeed. Things like call performance (average time to handle a call, sales conversion rates for direct sales agents, retention rates for customer loyalty agents, etc), progress through data lists (i.e. agents are provided a long list of people who fit XYZ criteria; how many of those accounts do they access, how many do they call, is a sale-made call three minutes longer than a no-sale call, how many times are they transferred or put on hold, how many times do they put the customer on hold...); customer satisfaction (we get customers to fill in semi-frequent surveys following agent contacts); and of course good old revenue ;)
Then there's trend analysis year-on-year and per-campaign, all to try and figure out the reasons why the data is what it is and see if we can make life easier for the agents and better for the customers!
Administrator at design firm
That really sounds like something I'd just be proud to have written on my business cards. Anything special you or your team are working on?
I think there's a serious misunderstanding when I say administrator...I mean like, I issue invoicing, contracts, etc. I have some side projects, but I'm more of a Pam Beesley, if you watch The Office.
Not that I'm ashamed of my job, but apparently "administrator" has many different hats that I didn't know about and people often get confused.
I don't like to give too much personal info out, but we definitely have/had famous clients.
Ah, yeah. I drew a line from Administrator to a PC ---> Administrator at a business. My bad!
Still cool, though.
;)
I write commercially published books for children and teens.
Anything we may have heard of? What seems to be the new obsession now that we've (hopefully) moved on from sparkly vampires?
Nine books so far, but if I gave you the titles I wouldn't be anonymous anymore! Not a bestselling author (except for one early book that shot up the children's charts in the UK), but I've had a few nice award nominations and some good reviews.
As for trends, vampires have been passé for over a decade -- I can't even recall the last YA vampire novel I saw. Fairies, zombies, angels, and dystopias (the latter spurred by the success of the HUNGER GAMES) are likewise old hat. There was a resurgence of interest in contemporary fiction a couple of years ago after the success of John Green's THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, but right now epic secondary-world fantasy seems to be going strong as well.
Wow, I just realized that the first Twilight movie came out over 10 years ago which means the books must be 15+ years old by now.
I'm out of touch.
You and most of the journalists writing articles about YA! Every time a new article comes out that references Twilight or the Hunger Games as an example of what's going on in the field, every YA author rolls their eyes and groans simultaneously. :)
I'm still trying to find a first job to be honest.
Anything you're interested in trying?
Not in particular.
I wrangle satellite imagery from the ends of the Earth for scientists and their logistics people.
Is this imagery that you share with the internet or others? What's it mainly used for?
We have provided imagery used to count penguins, study rock formations, map sea ice, find new crevasses in the Antarctic. We've just finished creating an 8m DEM of the entire Arctic and are working on a 2m version.
The imagery is unclassified, commercial shots mainly from Digital Globes constellation, that the US government has licensed for the DoD and can be used for no extra cost by federally funded researchers. I hope that makes sense.
I design apps
Is there a certain usage for the apps you design, or is it whatever a client wants?
I used to do a lot of freelance work which was basically whatever clients wanted, but now I'm working on a project with a few colleagues :)
I am a customer service rep for Amazon.com. if you have questions I would love to answer them
How do I get <6 hour delivery for free? I just ordered some things from Amazon, I'm sure I'll think of more questions in the next few days.
volunteer in a thrift store
How is that? Are you hoping to get employed?
It's not the most physically demanding job but because I have chronic illness, it leaves me feeling very tired and sore for a long time. I can barely make it in because of pain or fatigue a lot of the time but when I can make it, I truly enjoy my job! I enjoy it because it satisfies my need to sort through piles of junk and keep or throw things out or tidy up. At the moment, I have not been in for a few weeks because I was in a lot of pain, more than usual and now I have a bout of bronchitis and feel like death warmed up.
boring lawyer in one of those weird subspecialties that makes me entirely useless in the vast majority of situations where you think 'I might need a lawyer'.
What's the sub-specialty and why'd you decide to do something somewhat obscure?
Senior Software Engineer - I do web stuff. I got to pick my own title so I chose this in order to sound a little more "serious" for LinkedIn.
Are you looking forward to graduating?
Ha, senior joke. What are you currently working on?
Information Technology for a small family-run company.
It seems like that would be vastly different than for a large company. Maybe even "easier" in a way?
It's rewarding. Also I really appreciate just how direct things are. I report to my boss, the president of the company. So there isn't any translation or peeking around edges or Go/Stop/Go/Stop/Abandon/Zombie/Go craziness. :)
Currently a grocery store worker, attending trade school for welding.
What kind of welding?
Just general, probably going to get a local job in a fab shop while I get my associates, then join the boilermakers or something similar.
I am a university lecturer and medical anthropologist, I teach several areas of bio anthropology and cultural anthropology and I research human health and how it's affected by external factors, such as healthcare systems, location, culture, income, etc.
Have you written anything? What's the current "big thing" the community is focused on?
I have been published many times, but more details might be somewhat identifying in my very small niche within the larger community.
I work for a company that offers moderation services to other companies. Basically, I take swears off facebook pages for most of the day.
That sounds like a very stressful job D:
It can be, if it's very busy or if a brand posts something controversial. Otherwise it's pretty laid back, most of my projects are reasonably quiet.
I'm the CTO of a large company.
What kind of company?
i pester doctors for medical records so we can bill insurance companies for people's medical equipment. i still cannot believe how hard it is to get a doctor to fill out a form...
