My kids aren't in private school mainly just because we're zoned for the top rated public schools in our county. If we were in a bad area, we ould strongly consider private schooling or even home schooling.
Yes, that's our reason for considering private school. Our public schools are nice, but unfortunately, I've heard recently there has been a rise in drug use in the area.
I remember back when I was school, there was a real sense of shelter and deterrence from those types of things (drugs, gangs, crime in general, etc.). There was also more attention on the kids needs since the classes were quite small.
Home schooling is an interesting option, but we wouldn't have the time to dedicate to it to really make sure our kids get the education we want them to have. We both work 8-5 jobs. I'm an architect, she's an insurance agent.
I've been lead to understand that the students that do the best are not the ones that get into the good public schools, but the ones that apply, even if they are rejected. That the students, the homelife and the culture of education is more at play than which school they are in.

I said no. By kid won't be in school for years, but we are strong proponents of public education.
