    Kuvira! Or Lin. Or... Toph? They're all my favorites, you can't take that away from me. ;_;

My favorite as a kid was always Katara, first because she was the only girl in season one and second because I thought waterbending was really cool. Her S1 finale fight against Zuko impressed me, I guess? And as the series went on and I went from a naive 11 to a cool 13 (so mature) I really enjoyed her streaks of ruthlessness. Plus, baby me became a Zutara shipper after encountering it while browsing for Teen Titans fanfic. I remember writing a long and devoted paean to her when my high school Order of the White Lotus club did a survey.

Kuvira's my favorite now, probably. She's the best villain in the series: compelling backstory, valid reasons for doing what she's doing, justified in her own mind, smokin' hot... I love how you can see why people would follow her when she's on screen, and I completely maintain that she'd be better for the Earth Kingdom than Wu (the rest of the world, however...). Plus, metalbending rules, and I really loved the fluidity and inventiveness of Kuvira's bending.

Eeeeek! I love you! You're my people!

That is, I first fell in love with Lin in LOK, and am also now head over heels for Kuvira and planning ridiculously ambitious fic about the Metal Clan and her reuniting and/or post-season and will definitely be all too willing to discuss (possibly waaay too much) about this.

Every one of those things is why I loved. Even when she screwed up in a big way, she was trying to do what she saw as the right or necessary thing, and she did it competently to boot.

And the family background, and dancing, and her metalbending, and I'm a goner.

Toph was definitely my fave season one, along with Zuko.

Yesssss. I'm super down to talk about ambitious Kuvira fic! She's really interesting from a socio-political perspective, especially in the context of what real-world leaders have historically done. She'd probably be a hero if she existed in ATLA's world, but in Korra's, which is entirely more globalized, her sort of strong nationalism is more "threat to world peace" than business as usual. Like, the older generation probably looks at her and sees another potential Sozin.

I do think LoK's lack of a compelling Kuvira-alternative is notable, though: Wu is a mess, Suyin doesn't want it, and though I don't think we're supposed to think Raiko's role is shady, he probably should not have as much influence as he does. I kind of wanted them to institute either some sort of popular election system or council of governors, but the lack of infrastructure in the Earth Kingdom makes that difficult and also before or maybe even after trying to nuke Republic City, Kuvira would probably win.

Awesomeness and so much to say! Quick question: do you think we should talk Kuvira here or in a new post?

      • acerbictomesAug 15, 2016 at 10:48 PM

Hmm. New post? I will make one. And perhaps it'll attract more Kuvira fans.

Also wanted to add a specific +1 to this: "I completely maintain that she'd be better for the Earth Kingdom than Wu (the rest of the world, however...)."

I can never decide between Toph and Sokka, tbh.

    • metalclanAug 15, 2016 at 1:20 PM

They're both adorable and I love when they gang up!

  • Brachylagus_fandomAug 17, 2016 at 10:25 AM

Suki! I am a sucker for kickass women and I kind of imprinted on her when she came back.

Zuko is my favourite. I just really like his character arc... and the way that he's almost always only unintentionally funny.

    • metalclanAug 18, 2016 at 9:02 AM

I swear he had the best character arc in ATLA.

  • adastradAug 18, 2016 at 1:16 PMΔ

in A:tLA it has to be Zuko and Sokka.

in LoK it curiously became Prince Wu. I don't really know how or why it happened, but he's just so funny and adorable to me and he somehow became my favorite...

    • metalclanAug 18, 2016 at 1:20 PMΔ

He is hilarious! And adores Mako, poor guy.

      • adastradAug 18, 2016 at 1:30 PMΔ

Okay, yeah - I take it back, I know how it happened: I love how Mako and Wu interact, hahaha. They shot straight into my shipper heart and I was powerless against it.

      • metalclanAug 18, 2016 at 1:31 PM

I love those two. And I always feel for Mako while Wu is blithely oblivious to his frustration! :D

  • meerAug 28, 2016 at 9:08 AM

Super-late to this thread, but nvm.

LoK - Tenzin is the undisputed fave, although Korra isn't far behind.

A:tLA - my fave is Appa. I love Toph & Azula as well, and if they had showed up earlier I'm sure that they would have beaten him to the top spot. As it was though, Appa assumed the lead in early S2 simply because I wasn't enthusiastic about any of the core Gaang members and I thought that it was cute that Appa was claustrophobic and had taken a liking to Sokka. And then he got kidnapped by the Sandbenders, & his position as The Fave was sealed by tears & snot. So many tears. That storyline was brutal.

Zuko, because I deeply identify with him for personal reasons.

My second favorite is Toph, because of her mind blowing bending and sheer badassery. She was definitely my role model as a kid, even though it got me in sooo much trouble as a kid.
