This makes me giggle like a 12 year old every time I hear it.
I remember watching the first episode when it was brand new, thinking "eh, this show might be OK". Seeing this episode cemented this series as a "OMG MUST WATCH EVERY WEEK!"
Rewatching this episode, knowing the rest of the series, I fell like they did a great job of setting each character's tone right from the get-go.
I think they really did nail introducing everybody. I'll be back later tonight with more commentary. :)
Were the first two episodes originally aired back to back? They feel a lot like a single episode split in half.
They're combined on the place I'm watching them. I think they were a pilot initially. Just like the finales are often actually one long episode split into more than one.
OMG, I forgot how much I love Katara and Sokka being Katara and Sokka when it's really them being them. My favorite moment was Katara unfazed at icing Sokka, just flipping around and throwing ice behind her back at the soldiers! That's substance over style. :) The whole episode was really good though and strong. Loved the little Avatar state bit too.
