For the fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: The Legend of Korra
Topic of the Week: Family
Quick! Who's your favorite family in the Avatarverse?
I absolutely love how large of a role family plays in both series and in the comics. There's Sokka and Katara being family in the opening scenes of ATLA, paralleled against Zuko and Iroh.
There's the dysfunctional family dynamics played out between Azula and Zuko and their father throughout the series.
Mai, Ty Lee, and Azula first meet the Avatar and company because they need to rescue her baby brother.
There's the Beifong family, dysfunctional from season 2 ATLA all the way through season 4 LOK. (I love them anyway).
There's Korra's family, loving and supportive of her growing into her role as the avatar.
There's Asami, betrayed by family and reconciling in the end.
There's Mako and Bolin, my favorite brothers, and Korra's cousins, Desna and Eska, some of my favorite twins.
There's so much goodness of family on screen and how it goes wrong and no matter what, how important it is. I absolutely loved watching the journey in the comics of Zuko beginning to reconcile how to treat his family in the aftermath of having to become their enemy.
Which one's your favorite family? Do you love them all? Talk about which families work well, are strong, what they did right, what they did wrong, or just those favorite family moments. Like rescuing Iroh from his own love of tea!

I haven't read the comics or even finished LOK, but I think Zuko's family is my favorite, because there's the most to learn from it. A few examples, though there are probably more:
Sokka and Katara's family is the perfect example of a really great and supportive family, which is awesome and I love theirs for it, but not everyone has that, and even if they don't, they can still make their situation great and don't have to just feel like they're out of luck because they got stuck with a bum family.
Good points! I love Zuko's family for much the same reason, though I especially love this one:
And his relationship with Iroh. It's such a beautiful picture of unconditional love, I can't even say.
That said, I hereby admit, my favorite family is the Beifongs. I can't help it. I love all the individual characters and then watching them interact and love each other despite how awfully they can fail each other... It resonates with me, though I won't go too deep into which parallels I recognize from my own family. But I love how complicated they are and yet still loving for all that.
