Hi everyone - I'm Morvidra, aka Fee! I loved Gimli and Legolas' friendship from when I read the book first as a wee little thing. And like several here, I blame Sansûkh for getting me into them as a couple - vividly remember the moment it made me sit up and go "wait, what? they were flirting all this time? HOW DID I NOT REALISE THIS?"
So much love for the enmity-leading-to-friendship and the total trust they develop by the end. And, you know, the sailing-to-Valinor together because of their great love. :)
Hi Fee! Great to see ya!
Hehe, that sounds like a great realization! They can be very sneaky flirts. One of the reasons I maintain that this ship has some of the best innuendos! Bless this ship! After all, these two captain their own ship all the way to Valinor! Looking forward to seeing you around here!
Hi! I'm Jenny. I think you can blame most of my current obsession with Gigolas (and Bagginshield, for that matter) on Sansûkh. I read the whole fic (well, what what the whole fic then) in February and fell so hard I still haven't been able to get out of that particular pit.
Not that I'm complaining. :)
Anyway, what I love most about Gigolas -- and there are so very many things to love -- is the respect and regard they have for each other once they get over the elf and dwarf thing. How both of them are just "See this person here? This is the best person in all of Arda, and don't try to tell me differently."
Glad to meet you, Jenny!
Sansûkh is such a great fic! I am right there with you!
And agreed about their mutual esteem for each other is fantastic! And whoa befall anyone who bad mouths one within the other's hearing range!
Hey, I'm Ace! I got into LotR as a smallish kid when a friend insisted on showing me the movies because I "looked just like one of the elves" (unfortunately, it turned out she was referring to Elrond). I read the Hobbit and proceeded to dip in and out of the fandom for ages. I went through approximately a metric ton of fanfic and then, somewhere around the advent of the last Hobbit movie, I encountered Sansûkh. And to boil down an awful lot of reaction... d a m n. I started a reread of it the other day, and that launched me into another yet another gigolas fic odyssey. Somewhere between that and the "perhaps your friends who are unfamiliar with LotR will get a bit bored with hearing you deconstruct gigolas tropes" realization it occurred to me to see what sort of fandom community was running around. And here I am. To be honest, I can't even pinpoint what I like best about the ship. The absolutely staggering relationship development? The profound levels of trust and friendship and fondness? How ridiculously compatible they are? I dunno man but it's breaking my heart
Glad to meetcha, Ace! (and Elrond is hella fine, in my opinion!)
Ah yes, Sansûkh! I feel like that project has brought a lot of fans together in a wonderful way! I'm so glad it led you here! I've really enjoyed that fic too, and done a few fanworks to go along with it. So far it sounds like we're getting fans from all around!
Let's face it, it's just everything about it! The friendship, the joy, the devotion, the pain, the sadness, the comfort... everything! And there seems to be more to love everyday!
Hallo, so nice to see this new place :)
Not much to say really, I guess, other than this is my forever otp. I'm also on tumblr and ao3 with the same name.
Very nice to meet you!
They really do stand the test of time, don't they? :D
I'm a dedicated genfic reader/writer but I will ALWAYS love gigolas. They're really the exception to every rule XD
Hello, all - I'm lisafer/Lisa. I've been a Gimli/Legolas shipper since I read LotR, and in the last few years joined the online fandom. (Mainly writing fic, but also doing a couple of parody songs and other silliness.)
And while this is my total OTP, I also love their friendship. I think the change in their relationship and the representation of their races and easing tension between them is my favorite subplot of LotR.
Hi Lisa! hugs It's great to see you! (Always love your parodies! And fics!)
Isn't it great how our source material is so rich with subplots and secondary themes? Especially when it gives us Legolas & Gimli together!
Hello all. I'm Miranda, and I got into LOTR when I was about 6, when my dad read me the books. I've shipped Gigolas since then, even though I didn't really know what shipping was. My favourite thing about the ship is how it ends a racial tension that goes back to the First Age, or at least lessens it.
Glad to meet you, Miranda! And high fives for shipping before we knew what shipping was!
And agreed. They go up against such long enmity, and end up ushering a new age of cooperation. If that doesn't demonstrate the power of their relationship, I don't know what would. It's also great to explore how they navigate the new cooperation between their peoples.
I also kind of see them as reincarnations/being compared to Celebrimbor and Narvi
I love comparisons between the two pairs! They're both just fascinating in their contrasts and friendships. (I love Narvi and Celebrimbor however they go together; friends, romantic partners, however!)
Hi all. I'm Dorkvania. In addition to other stuff, I maintain a masterpost for the pairing.
I've been into the pairing for a long time, but wound up being quiet about it around the time of the original movies. Pairings with Dwarves didn't seem to be okay to large portions of LOTR fandom until the Hobbit cast was revealed. They have a great dynamic that only seems to get more interesting the more you look into the lore and think about the story and what a single sentence here or there implies. There is a lot to talk about and play with for this pairing.
Nice to meet you, Dorkvania!
Got to say, that is one impressive masterpost! If you'd like to make a post on the community here with a link to it, I'll create a tag for archives and masterposts.
And it really is incredible all of the layers to their relationship. I love digging into the layers of their interactions. There is a lot to pull from that really makes writing them a joy!
(And boy do I remember back then. Trawling through the internet archives trying to find any Gimli/Legolas, no matter the quality because there was barely anything.)
Thanks! I've been working on it, well, by the post date for over two years now! I was thinking of posting in a week or two once more people have filtered in and see if anyone has more that should be added. I'd also like to move it off LJ someday.
I've tried to let people know about the レゴギムweb project stuff, but I think a lot of fans sort of missed it.
Sounds like a good plan to me. Once you've got it set the way you like I'll look into ways we can link it to make it more visible.
I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that project. Can you translate the name? I'm always interested in seeing new activity in the fandom! :)
In roman letters it's Legogimu, the Japanese smish name for the pairing. They had a Gigolas fanworks fest over the summer with things like this. A couple people posted about it, but since reposting the work would be bad only the work of one artist who is already on tumblr really got seen. I've got links in the masterpost for non-Japanese speakers to be able to see some of the Japanese fanworks. But if you scroll through that one twitter account, everything from the fanworks fest was retweeted there.
Oh wow! That's some beautiful art!!! Thank you for directing me to it!
Still scrolling threw the twitter and there is just so much lovely art!!! Made my night! =D
It's an amazing mix of stuff! From papercraft to fabric design. A separate post just on the Japanese side of fandom and how to see stuff is likely in order :) I'd love for those artists to get a few more retweets.
Times like these make me wish I had a twitter! that might be another thing to make post about as the community grows. That way we direct some of the primarily English speaking fans to a way they can show some love to some of the Japanese fan creators!
I made a post already, but those links are all in my guide that I'll post later anyway :) We are a very international fandom, and it's definitely interesting how active the Japanese contingent is.
Hi all, I am Dets, it is fantastic to be here (THANKS NOTA!!)! I've been shipping these two since before I understood what shipping was, aaaaall the way back when I first read the books. Gimli was immediately my favourite character, and I loved his relationship with Legolas and how it grew and changed so very profoundly. It just seemed blatantly obvious to me that they were together! I was disheartened in the years after the LOTR movies were released because it appeared that my forever-OTP was considered a crackship only. Still very grateful to The Hobbit films for making Dwarves a popular option again!
Gotta say, I am super flattered that a couple of people have mentioned my fic here. small scream of joy thank you! I am so glad and honoured that you like.
ALSO OH MY GOODNESS, I am astounded and overjoyed by the wonderful work of the Japanese Legogimu artists!!! How incredible!!! I feel like I must get a twitter to let them know how much I appreciate and enjoy their work!
I'm so looking forward to this community and meeting new folks and chatting about these two incredible, wonderful, heroic, beautiful dorks. <3
Hi Dets Dear!!!! hugs Glad to see you over here!
And those times between movies were dark times for the ship. I can remember going through archives just trying to find any fic with endgame gigolas. Thankfully that mood has changed!
Isn't it great!? This community has only been around for a few days, and we're already getting to broaden our horizons!
As with everyone, if you have any ideas of what you'd like to see in this community, don't hesitate to post and discuss! Still trying to figure out some fun things all of us fans can do together!
Hi everyone! I'm Nota! I ended up shipping Gimli and Legolas back when I first read the book as a bitty girl. Didn't understand shipping back then, but I thought it was obvious that they were a couple.
Gotta say, my favorite thing about these two is the way their relationship grew from bitter dislike to the strongest of bonds! (And the banter. I love the banter!)
Hey guys, I'm Miri! I like my elves being weird dorks and my LOTR with an extra sprinkling of fantasy/body horror stuff every now and then.
I'm best known for never tagging my headcanons and AUs on tumblr, which is very frustrating when im trying to go back and find them lmao. I haven't been super active for about a year but im still super into this ship and the version of LOTR ive crafted for myself.
I have an old fanfic rec document if anyone's interested
Nice to meet you, Miri! Oooo! I love AUs and the touch of the fantastical! Sounds like a version I'd like to hear about! And perfect timing with the recs. I'm just about to post the Friday Fic Rec thread, so that would be the perfect place to link the doc so everyone sees it! :D
Hello, I'm Seas and I'm a Gigolasholic (Hi, Seas...). Shipped these two since I was eighteen and became infatuated with shipping stuff for LOTR. The nads these two had to stick their necks out for each other makes me happy. <3
Hi, Seas! Glad to have you here! And agreed. These two have some stones to go against everything they have for each other!
