just got home last night
and aside from stashing the banana cake* i got from JB (johor bahru, the state capital of johore, the state closest to singapore, if tht helps anyone), and chasing after my cat to take off her temp shirt, checked on her scar and washed her butt (because tht shirt honestly diminishes her self-esteem), i have done nothing else except sleep, eat, and spin yarn. okay i did some colouring as well. unfortunately sunday is then my get up and go day already, not the least because i'm leaving for bangkok on tuesday. as it is, i gotta be sure i have enough blacks, whites and greys in my travel wardrobe since the whole nation is in mourning.
*that cake has an amazingly light crumb, while not being dry at all. it's got a bit of pandan in it, i think. it comes from this old bakery in town that came highly recommended, tht still uses charcoal ovens. i didn't manage to go, but a couple of the volunteers did. Just as well, another participant collapsed, and had to be sent to the hospital. this one had a better ending though. if anything this project has shown me up close just how deeply and widely unhealthy our marginalised and disenfranchised (what our govt have now termed as the 'B40' in yesterday's just-announced 2017 Budget, ie the bottom 40% just in terms of income) are, especially the urban ones. chronic conditions and lifestyle-related diseases are much too common for them. we've done them badly. to illustrate: the free meal programme for primary schoolchildren has in their regular menu things like rice with sausage or fried beehoon with either air sirap (cordial drinks - syrups mixed with water) or plain water. the devil is in the details and it does seem like we're overrun with such demons.
