Telling Colleagues about a Pregnancy
How to Tell Your Boss You're Pregnant: 5 Tips
Photo credit:MFer Photography / Foter / CC BY-ND No conversation at work produces more anxiety than telling your boss you're pregnant. Even quitting may be easier! Since nerves make it tough to keep even important details in mind, here are 5 tips to help you break the news: 1.
I remember being so nervous to tell my boss and team about my pregnancy last time. I think I told my boss when I was about 13 weeks and the rest of my (male, 20-something) team around 17-18 weeks when it was getting very obvious.
This time around, I'm not nervous, but I do find myself carefully staging annual reviews and project assignments so that I don't get any "maternity tax" complications. I work at a great company with great people, but I also believe it's practically impossible for people to ignore pregnancy when assessing your team worth. Fair or not, is that just how it is?

Yeah, as much as we have made great progress, I also felt it was super important to kick ass during my first trimester so that when I told people, they would be like, well, she's been doing fine so far. The truth is that people can still fire you for being pregnant, regardless of what the law is. On a positive note, numbers of pregnant working women are at an all-time high right now and women are also working longer into their pregnancy, which I think is awesome and will help w long-term change. People thought it was weird that I planned on working up to birth (I wound up being induced and started leave the day before my induction- had to get my last mani/pedi in!), but a lot of friends had the same plans and were lucky enough to do so (obviously things like bed rest happen and health comes first).
