For young teens
Here's a list of books that some kids I know really enjoyed, and they don't even like reading:
The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielson
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
The Maze Runner by James Dashner

I've never heard of The False Price, but The Lightning Theif is basically classic YA/middle grade at this point. It's gone on two spawn two spin-off series and two movies. The Maze Runner has gotten a lot of buzz since the movies came out. I've read all three books in the main series and they were phenomenal. The prequel novel on the other hand...was pretty bad (I wouldn't recommend it).
One of the best YA series is the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. They might seem to be for a younger crowd but I find them to be very heavy thematically. The first in the series is called So You Want To Be A Wizard. I started reading them when I was 12 and I still read them today at 33. A new one just came out in February.
