Who is your favorite author?

I just read the follow up to Things Fall Apart, No Longer at Ease (a great read if you haven't read it yet!) - I had no idea that Chinua Achebe's catalog was so deep. This had me wondering what other authors I should be getting into. Who should I read next?

Choosing a favorite author is so difficult, it's almost something that I have to classify by mood.
For a decently weighted line of subject matter, but a sharp satirical humor, I'd definitely recommend Kurt Vonnegut. Cat's Cradle is always a fun and witty Vonnegut starter.
For incredible depth, detail, and storyline--but occasionally dry reading, as comes with detail--I'd put John Steinbeck down as a must. East of Eden--long commitment, fascinating story; Of Mice and Men--short, enjoyable, tear-jerking.
And personally near and dear to my heart, though continually disgusting, is Chuck Palahniuk. He is a phenomenal storyteller. Wonderful twists, turns, and loop-de-loops all throughout his fiction. Unfortunately, he specializes in something of a skid-row fiction: very nitty-gritty, depicting the general dregs of society. Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey was 100% the best-told story I have ever read in my life, and can really only be viewed as a whole from the last page. That being said, it can get a li'l gross. Fight Club is a tame read from Palahniuk, and a bucketload of fun.
Rant is absolutely brilliant storytelling! The layering of it makes it a great re-read too. Have you read all of Chuck Palahniuk's books?
