Currently Reading: The Story Of Religion In America

The Story Of Religion In America by William Warren Sweet This is a great read for understanding the diversity in religious beliefs in the USA. While the statistics are outdated, it's premise is sound.

I just picked up Kevin Kruse's book about business and Christianity in America. I've heard good things and he seems like a really smart guy:

Please do keep us posted about your thoughts on Sweet's book!

I've been doing a lot of reading lately about the religious sort of "waves" that happened in America, especially during the early and mid-1800s. There were lots of attempts at Utopias, and in some ways, it was just as crazy a time as the 1960s...people experimenting with different family and social structures, rejecting common ideas of the day, etc.

That's a good observation @Eliza America was believed to be the land of new opportunity, not just economically but also the pursuit of Utopian experiences. The first perhaps being the Puritans "City on a Hill" colony, where they tried to recreate the OT theocracy. (lasted 1 generation and then failed). The 1800's saw the influence of European philosophy washing ashore, and as you said, a lot of experimenting with religious and social orders.
