Place to discuss, rec, and generally squee over fan fiction about Steve Rogers and Tony Stark
Sunday Open Discussion Thread?
Hi everyone! I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes by posting the Sunday open discussion thread (if I am, I'm sorry!!)? I'm mainly posting because I'm spending the day working on my Stony WIP and I really need the occasional distraction from writing!! I'd love to hear what all you other authors do when you're struggling with writing. But aside from that, how are all of you doing? Are you spending the weekend writing as well (and if so, what are you working on??) or have you read a particular awesome fic recently (doesn't have to be Stony! I recently re-watched Inception and have read some lovely Arthur/Eames fics in the past week)?
I saw Dr. Strange this weekend and I actually really enjoyed it! Although I'm pretty sure that my favorite character in the whole movie was the cloak of levitation. Well that, or Benedict Cumberbatches' cheekbones (which like deserve their own film credit). If you've seen it, what did you think?
In other random personal news, I'm trying to break (or at least scale down) my diet coke addiction. I don't like coffee or tea, so I mostly get caffeine boosts from diet coke (which isn't terribly healthy) and end up drinking way too much so I decided to quit cold turkey like 3 days ago and am struggling.
Anyways, I hope all of you are having an awesome weekend!!

I finished the rough draft of my essay today and am now rewarding myself by reading some of Wordsplat's older fics, they're so good! It's freezing here, so I've stayed in doors most of the week alternating between writing my essay and bingewatching episodes of Community - all in all, not a bad weekend :) It was Guy Fawkes Night yesterday, so I got to see some nice fireworks as well, that was fun! One of the highlights of my week was reading RurouniHime's new fic Mailbox Full, I've been hoping that she would write post-CA:CW fic, and the first installment definitely didn't disappoint, I had all the feels.
Hope everyone else is enjoying their weekend :D
enjoy your reward! you earned it!!! 😄
I'm glad you had a nice weekend! all of my knowledge of Guy Fawkes Night comes from movies and TV... fireworks are always nice though.
ohhh, a recc! will go read! :D
Listen, all of Wordsplat's AU's are so good, it's a blessing every time I read them.
Oh my goodness I just read the fic you recommended and I too had ALL of the feels. I still struggle so much with reading post CA:CW stuff (too many emotions!) that I haven't read a ton, so it's always nice to be rec'ed something.
Congrats on finishing your draft! Sounds like a very nice reward!
I actually helped my friend with her reaper76! fic this weekend, so i'm very happy about that, my boys need some happiness in their lives (They have their own civil war in the game basically, I ship them because of stony)
I've been fleshing out ideas and working on dragon age fic, keep on bouncing around, but I'm back to working on the first part. I feel bad because I'm invariably making some of the character bad in the crossover (Teryn Cousland seemed a much better father than Howard Stark lmao) and I'm basically destroying Tony' whole life in the first chapter as per the games, but I'm really enjoying writing. It's very weird writing action scenes tbh, but I think I'm doing alright.
I think.
Thanks for starting this! I've been gone all day.
No problem!
Good luck breaking the habit!! That shit is ridiculously addictive. I've only had one friend successfully break her Coke drinking habit, but that was by applying all the Coke in her house as cleaning agents instead. Learning that she could fucking clean her oven and toilet bowl out with Coke seemed to put a new perspective on drinking it. (Also, she had a clean apartment by the end of it!)
I went out to see the Dia de los Muertos celebration in Santa Ana this past weekend, and my god, hands down it is the best one I've ever seen. Got new earrings and, ironically, a t-shirt to wear when I teach on Tuesday - the now-classic "Nasty Women Vote!" Except my aim is to vote today and not tomorrow, because omg, the lines and crowds will likely be insane.
Also, and honestly probably most importantly, this weekend marked my first full day(s) in this community, and y'all are fucking rockstars. I (quite anxiously, one will know) shared the current draft of my first Stony fic here and y'all just... I can't even tell you how nice it was to hear your feedback and excitement about it. Like you've all said already - writing is hard as hell, and half the time (at least for me; I'm sure everyone has their own grrrrrrr-obstacles) it's the solitary aspect of it that knocks the wind out of me. If you don't have anyone to bounce ideas off of, or just confirm something against, this becomes infinitely more difficult, and it's so exciting to have found (been led to) a community like this where y'all are so supportive and kind and you /get it./ Anyway - all that to say, THANK YOU! Y'all were one of the (if not The) highlights of my weekend.
THANKS for the encouragement (I will definitely need it to get through work today). And its hilarious that coke can be used a cleaning product, I love that your friend was able to get rid of her addiction and clean all in one fell swoop! That's what I call multitasking!
Happy Voting! I voted early last week, so I am already done and am just sitting her biting my nails anxiously as I wait on the rest of the country.
Finally, welcome!! I too have fallen in love with this community. I've never really actively engaged in fandom (despite reading tons of fic and writing), so I too am really enjoying my time here on Imzy. I've always been kind of terrified of tumblr because of some of the horror stories I've heard, so I'm glad that there's this space where everyone is so nice and you have the opportunity to bounce ideas of people and get encouragement for your latest projects!
I just have this horrible feeling in my gut about the election and it hurts to even think of that alternative, soooo I'm just going to bury my head in grading and hope the vote counts for something.
I'm so onboard with everything you said about here & Tumblr. Tumblr is such a weird space, sometimes you might as well be yelling into the ether. For all that it's nearly 1000 people, it feels really small and cozy. I don't know if that's cause most people lurk (as I have most of my life, like you said, too), but this is so cool. I'm excited by the potential, though potential for what, exactly, I can't guess.
Haha oh my goodness, I totally understand re: the election. Like I've spent so much time stressing out about it, but now I've just reached this zen place where I'm like "there's nothing I can do anymore so I just need to keep breathing"
I totally agree that this community feels small and intimate. I think a big part of the reason is that like everyone here is just so committed to encouraging discussion and keeping this a positive space. It's lovely! And I definitely agree that it has a lot of potential, I think that it's easier to form relationships on here than on tumblr?? But that might just be me projecting :D
For reasons beyond my comprehension, I've made two good friends on Tumblr whom I talk to regularly. One I even traveled with in summer 2015 (and will be traveling with again in a month)! But this feels more like a family of choice, and I for one feel that there's room for everyone and everyone's ideas. But.. as you said: that could be me projecting.
Either way, we are projecting awesome, happy things! <3
Hahaha yes, hearts all around <3
Sunday was pretty meh, really, but TOMORROW I SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET THE THINGY THAT WILL LET ME GET INTERNET AT HOME. AFTER MORE THAN A MONTH. coughs So, keep your fingers crossed, please?
Oh my goodness, have you been without internet for a month?!?! That is like amazing, I would probably die without internet. My fingers are definitely crossed for you!
I definitely wouldn't able to deal with not having internet for a month, fingers crossed that you can get back to flailing and screaming about steve/tony soon :D :D
All appendages crossed!
oh my god, everything crossed! A month! how did you do? did you feel withdrawal symptoms?
Kudos to you for surviving so long omfg, I would've gone CRAZY haha. Fingers crossed for you, definitely :D
Blessed be the great powers of Internet Providers, for they provide services both wondrous and delightful. May their path to you only be directed with green traffic lights, and find convenient parking so that not another minute is wasted in bestowing upon you the Internet.
I've been spending most of the weekend on the verge of a cold, which is annoying when you're waiting for it to break out but it won't, at least not really? Thus I turned myself into a blanket burrito and binged cooking shows. I now have a mighty need to harvest new recipes and am almost caught up on Great British Menu.
I'm sorry you're sick! I know I always dread my first cold of fall/winter :( What cooking shows do you recommend? I've love the Great British Baking show but otherwise haven't seen a lot of other cooking shows (besides Cutthroat Kitchen which is hilarious) so I'd love to hear which ones you like!
Took me a second to remember that they call 'Great British Bake Off' Baking Show in the US for some reason haha. I'm a big fan of MasterChef and MasterChef: The Professionals, both the UK and the AUS version. (Really not a fan of the US one, it's too much drama and not enough cooking) Then there's My Kitchen Rules which is an Australian competition (they recently started with an UK version though I haven't watched that yet) and the Netflix show Chef's Table. I used to watch a lot of Anthony Bourdain's show where he travelled the world for food, but I can't remember the original title of that one. And the aforementioned Great British Menu :D
Hahaha "too much drama and not enough cooking" is basically how I view every single US cooking show. I'll definitely look into the non-US masterchefs though, they sound like fun!
They are! Everybody is being supportive and the contestants are respectful towards each other and it actually is about cooking. So much more relaxing.
Oh my goodness, actual cooking and people being supportive is my jam. It's why I love the Great British Bake Off (plus the cute sheep!)
We're experiencing a cold snap this weekend, so I also turned myself into a blanket burrito and bingewatched Community. I definitely need to get caught up on the Great British Bake Off, and I quite like the UK version of Masterchef as well :) I hope you feel better soon <3
God, it's so cold. The burrito is the only way to live with these temperatures.
I woke up in the middle of the night yesterday because I was so cold and then got up to put on more layers, it's freezing.
I dug out my hot water bottle today. When the hot water bottle comes out, things just got serious.
Community marathon!! Man, that's a damn nice way to spend a weekend. I don't know how cold 'cold snap' means, but I hope it sets you up for cozy weather season! I was freezing my tootsies off earlier this week and would NOT leave the bed .....until I looked up the temperature on my phone and realized it's fucking 16C/61F and felt so ashamed of myself.
I'm in St. Andrews (Scotland), and it hit 0C last night, that's pretty cold for me considering I spent the first 18 years of my life in Hong Kong :P Community marathon is an awesome way to spend a weekend, I'm glad you agree, it's always nice to revisit a favourite show after a long time away :)
omfg it's embarrassing how long it took for me to understand what that said. I'm so unfamiliar with the concept of 0C now that I kept staring at that going "OC? Nothing hit us yesterday, what..." (I live in Orange County, the 'OC') Also, YAY St Andrews! Y'all have good ice cream :P I studied in Edinburgh, which is a little farther south, but I feel you on the cold. And man, if those windows aren't double glazed.... oi vey, it gets drafty. Stay warm!
I go back and watch some favorites, but rarely make time for the whole thing, but they're all such gems. But man, the one with the Duncan Principle experiment? Or the ep where the Dean blackmails Jeff into convincing Troy to play on the football team? I pull from Community a lot when I teach now, those two are my go-tos.
I think 0°C counts as cold for everybody who hasn't grown up in northern Scandianavia or Sibera haha. As long as it doesn't get as cold as 2009 I'll muddle through (my grandfather died that year in December and we almost had to postpone the funeral because they had trouble digging the grave at -20°C)
Our ice cream is pretty awesome, even if this weather isn't necessarily ice cream weather :D I visited Edinburgh a few weeks ago to see a friend, it's pretty great too :) Edinburgh is a little further south but St. Andrews supposedly gets more sun than other areas of Scotland, so it all balances out. It hasn't been super windy these past few days, which is good, but it's still cold, brrr.
When I'm rewatching shows I usually just put it on the background when I'm doing other stuff and then switch to actually when I have the time, otherwise I'd never have the time as well. ahahahha the Duncan Principle experiment was classic, I love all the shenanigans the group gets up to - right now I'm watching Season Two's paintball two parter, the western aesthetic is awesome and I love me some badass Annie :) It's great that Community inspires you when you teach haha
0°C is cold for pretty much everyone, but then in some parts of Canada temperatures can go really low, so it's all relative I guess. I can't even begin to imagine how I would handle -20°C.
IDK who gets the most sun, I just know Glasgow gets next to none :P But man, I miss Edinburgh, especially now when it's just so much reading and writing, I wish I could go back to the reading room in the National Library - that place was a second home <3 I hope you had a terrific time!! What did you eat while you were there? what did you seeeee?
I was just there for two days so I just hung out with my friend, but we ate at this really good Korean BBQ restaurant and we also got some awesome Thai food - I want to go on a longer trip during Easter though, that would be so much fun! :)
That sounds so lovely!! I hope you get a chance to go, and when you do, that the city treats you right and gives you all the sun! Fingers crossed the Meadows will be in bloom for you!
best of luck fighting off the cold, hoping it will go away!
Thank you!
Uggghhh the worst. Please forgive my obvious piece of advice, but my nature is to yell out possible solutions to a problem until I'm either told to stop or the problem is resolved: maybe Berocca? That was always my go-to black knight whenever I felt the sniffles back in Scotland. Though I hear some people aren't big fans... if that's the case, obviously ignore this. Freaking vitamin C nuke though, drop that shit and coast.
Also, unrelated: what recipes are you hunting?
I haven't actually heard of Berocca before. Google tells me though that it's available here so I might just give it a try. Heaven knows I can always use a dose of vitamins, I don't get enough of them with my fruit allergies. (On a side note: I have the same 'problem' of wanting to provide a solution to everything, so you're in good company haha)
I'm always on the lookout for 'everyday recipes' from all over the world. Stuff that people actually cook and eat at home on a random Wednesday night.
Ohhhhh Berocca was the only thing I ever bothered to pick up for sick days, it's great! It's intended for exactly what you're describing, when you feel it coming on: you take it in the morning and it nips it in the bud! Definitely worth a try. It's got like what, 700% of your daily dose of Vit C, among bucketloads of other things. Have you tried crepes (or as I know them, pancakes)? In Sweden they were breakfast, but man, make a big batch and it will serve as anything. They're so easy to make! You can even stack them and put Nutella between each layer and make it into a cake.
I picked some up at the pharmacy today, so curious to see how it works :D
I love crepes! I'm not that great at making them because I can't get them as thin as I like so they end up being pancakes more often than not. But I will stuff myself with real crepes at Christmas markets and fairs. Bit of melted butter, cinnamon and sugar - heaven. Damn, now I want crepes haha.
Yay!! Fingers crossed! I hope you feel better already! I don't know how crepe recipes go, but if you look for Swedish pancakes (i.e. 1 egg, 1 measure flour, 2 measures liquid, salt and pepper if you like - liquid can be water or (any) milk, or a combination--it really doesn't matter. And it doesn't really matter what measure you use for flour/liquids, just that the proportion is 1:2) and then just start small in a hot pan, using far less batter than you imagine needing and then seeing how it goes. Thankfully it's not too expensive a recipe, so if you mess up half the batch, you're still golden :)
Well, I am about 10K in to the next chapter of Celestial Navigation. I've had fun writing Jarvis. Love me some Jarvis.
Saw Dr. Strange and really enjoyed it, too. The Cloak was great! Reminded me of the magic carpet in Aladdin.
Took my daughter and her friend to this corn maze/farm thing. Took the foster kittens to an adoption event. Did laundry. Where did my weekend go, lol?
Ready for Tuesday to be over. I have a bottle of wine ready.
Nice! Red or White? I'm a sucker for a good Malbec personally
Red! This is a Cab I like some Malbec, but Cab is my favorite unless I find a really, good Merlot.
Oooh, over here in NY, I think my favorite merlot is the one they pair with the steak at Wolfgang's Steakhouse. Goes so well together.
That sounds delicious!
That reminds me that I've got a bottle of white still sitting in the basement. It's just about cold enough outside to call for mulled wine.
Unfortunately, I tend to procrastinate by checking tumblr and reading fic when I am struggling to write sigh. As I told once, i do force myself for a certain amount of words each day, though, crappy or not. At one point I usually find my way again.
I am writing an assignment for the Holiday Stony fic exchange right now, it's going not so bad! 😄 And I just posted a big bang (but it's Spideytorch, not Stony. Another Spideytorch on the 17th, then the Stony one will be later this month on the 27th. Lots of editing in my future, and still need to find a beta! )
I saw Dr. Strange Friday night myself, and I enjoyed it a lot too! I am with you about the cloak. Loved it. BC did a very good job. The visual are stunning. Was it the movie that made you want to re-watch Inception? ha ha ha!
Good luck with weaning off diet coke! My own addiction is green tea lattes, and I try to not get more than two a week. but it's so gooooood!
Hahaha I too totally procrastinate and a daily word limit would probably help but I don't think I have the discipline. And I am super impressed by the number of fics you are planning on finishing in the next month! I will count myself luck if I can finish this one fic in the next month. GOOD LUCK with all the writing :D
And I totally agree about the visuals in Dr. Strange. I was absolutely transfixed. And although my watching of Inception was unfortunately unrelated, the whole time I was watching Dr. Strange I was thinking "This is what Inception would have been like if everyone took LSD"
I have have a lot of difficulty resisting challenges and it so happens that those 3 had posting dates in November. I've mostly written those fics between mid-August and mid-October, and the deadlines had me a constant almost panic! lol! But on the other hand, deadlines are pretty much the only things that force me to finish stuff, so that's why I sign up in the first place 😄 thanks you for the encouragement! I shall do that holiday fic, too, maybe more than one even. Good luck with your own stuff! you can do it!
lol! Inception on LSD is accurate! I think I'll go see it again on the big screen. It's made for it.
Thanks in return for the encouragement! I literally only have two scenes of smut to write before I finish this chapter so I just need to push through it :D
And I totally agree. I think I might have to go back and see Dr. Strange in 3D - I feel like its one of the rare movies that might actually be worth it!
go go go! /cheers
I personally saw it in 3D, and it was spectacular in places (even too much at times, maybe? I think someone with vertigo could get dizzy)
oooh, that's a lot of fic writing and a lot of fic I look forward to reading :D Good luck and we're all cheering you on <3
thank you Jenny! it's been fun writing those fics, and in fact you've been a great cheerleader for them already 😄
It's fun when it's time to share, though! hope you enjoy!
