Sunday Open Discussion Thread
Welcome to 2017! I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful holiday, however you marked it.
How was 2016 for you personally? I know there was a lot of turmoil in the world, but how did you weather the year? What did you learn, what did you do, what happened that you will think of when you look back on 2016?
How did you ring in the New Year? Make any resolutions? What do you hope to accomplish this year, in fandom or otherwise?

2016 started on a really dark note for me, which also matched our political climate. My work is on human rights and we all know 2016 was a shit year for that. I was depressed so I made Stony comics to cope. I was supposed to move to the US, but with Trump, I don't know...
Now I have a new job, and many online and offline friends who mean the world to me. My future plans have all changed..... It's new to me, being so uncertain about the future.
You're on the precipice! (I've always wanted to say that =D) That sounds daunting and exciting. But with good friends (on and off line) it sounds like you have a good support network for the challenges of navigating something new. I hope your new job brings lots of exciting opportunities! Wishing you the best!! Feel free to drop a line anytime if you'd like to talk, too.
Thank you you are always so kindhearted :')
This year has just been a year. I mean, I love to joke about how shitty it is, but all in all it was I guess meh.
I struggled a bit emotionally, however. Make that a lot. One of my friends attempted suicide (thankfully he's still alive and is well now.) and my cousin figure died in a car accident within 2 weeks of each other. It was a bit much, to be honest, but I fought through.
The highlight of my year was pretty much when I applied for the Ivy League Connection, which is a program to help low-income kids by basically giving them a taste of the best schools in the country. I have an interview on Thursday where I have a 50-50 chance of being one of 4 to receive a trip to Vanderbilt University in Tennessee to take a course, all expenses paid unless I have an overage fee on my bags.
Thank you for your hard work, and good luck!!!
LMAO what hard work??? XD
Thanks for the luck. :3
Oop, I thought you went in the Ivy League connection? :D
I'm not in it yet, my buddy.
Hopefully I will be Thursday night. ;)
Personally, 2016 was a year of positive growth - it was in the right direction, even when the distance was short. I sought help with anxiety, I'm learning (slowly) to be kinder and a better friend to myself, and I'm more honest with myself about how (and with whom) I like to spend my time. School and teaching is going well, and I'm happy about the friends I have around me for support. For me, 2017 will be about cultivating 1-2 healthy habits, and actively being my own friend.
Was that too serious? :-/ - Moving on to fandom! Lodging in the Stony fandom marked a surprising and very positive turn for me in 2016! @sabrecmc, you bore the brunt of this for most of that time, just so you know <3. Writing fic in this fandom - with all your support - has been rewarding and made me so happy, and even though it sometimes feels like the two fics will never end, I also kinda hope I don't stop. My 2017 fandom resolution is to be better about appreciating everyone's hard work better (commenting, kudos'ing, reblogging/commenting on art) and to write at least some of that modern royalty Stony AU that I kinda not-so-secretly love.
Not serious, but important! There's nothing better than cultivating healthy habits and being good to ourselves, so yay for that. :D
Tons of good vibes for your fandom projects, too!
Thank you! It's the kind goal that's worth the effort even if you fail, so either way it's a win win, I think. š
What a wonderful resolution!!! ššš Wishing you the best!
Thank you!
2017!!! :'D
2016 was pretty good all things considered! Graduated and got accepted into med and got to be involved with a lot of fandom/art-related things that I've never ever dreamed of being part of!! And managed to draw for 4 big bangs so that was pretty fun (now I'm addicted haha)
I'm sick on the first day on the New Year but eh, what else is new. Resolution-wise, I plan on drawing a lot more fandom things than I did in 2016 (which was actually a very....slow art year) & also commenting/kudo'ing on more fics. :)
Damn, what a huge 2016. Congratulations on your achievements!! I hope being a part of fandom is helping with stress from school.
Krya pƄ dig - feel better! I hope it's an omen of how you will only grow stronger and vanquish those who try to bring you down in 2017.
Wow, those accomplishments are so cool, congrats! And I hope you feel better soon~
Congrats on med school again!
Get better soon--hopefully that's all of being sick for all of 2017 for you hugs
AND LET ME REPEAT HOW MUCH I LOVE YOUR ART.
YAY CAZ!!!! I want to join the reverse big bang too. Any tips? :D
Happy New Year!
In 2016, I graduated, moved out of a city I hate, moved across the Europe and started a new totally different major in a city I love. So, pretty good, considering.
On the fandom side of things, I posted 170k to ao3 and started modding cap-im, so also great! And I started writing more original fiction, too.
2017 greeted me with broken heating.
170k - WOW WOW WOW GOOD JOB LAIRE ! :'D Also the move sounds incredible.
But I hope your heating gets fixed soon! :(
That all sounds so excellent, congratulations on all your accomplishments!! Especially the moving to a city you love - I hope it comes to love you back at every turn in 2017.
That heating should get with the program though, stat.
Ah, you're living the dream! Yay for being in a city you love and for writing so much. :D And I sure hope your heating gets fixed pretty soon.
Congrats!!!
Happy New Year! Personally, 2016 was largely forgettable for me, I think. A pretty unimpressive year that brought few interesting things to the table. I can barely recall anything about it; it's all a blur. Fandom-wise, it was quite cool, though. :D
My resolutions are sleeping better and a whole list of things that amount to personal growth. Sleeping better would be enough, though! And I hope I can start drawing more and giffing a bit in 2017. :)
Those sound like great resolutions (100% agree on sleeping better) and woo yes I'd love to see more of your art :D
Thank you! And yes, sleeping better is something we all need. :D
Yay for neutral years! They're better than (most) negative years.
Your resolutions sound fab, sleep is amazing and we all deserve it. I look forward to seeing your art - or even hearing more about it! On my part, I feel like I've been so unaware of all the work going on in the community, and this is so exciting, to actually interact with creative folks such as yourself :D
I hadn't seen it that way, but you're right! It's better for a year to be uneventful instead of full of terrible things.
And thank you! :D I hope 2017 is a year full of creativity for all of us!
