Place to discuss, rec, and generally squee over fan fiction about Steve Rogers and Tony Stark
Sunday Open Discussion Thread
Happy Sunday everyone! Another week behind us (which means another week closer to Infinity War and our boys being back together and another week closer to whatever the hell is happening in comics being over).
Is anyone else watching for spoilers now that IW is shooting? I'm the type who likes spoilers up until a certain point and then I typically shut them off when it starts to get too spoilery, whatever that means. I guess, I don't want exact plot points or details, just like to speculate for a while and have a general idea of what is going on. Don't want to know everything, though. How do you all handle spoilers?
If you haven't already done so and are interested, remember to add your city to our GotG 2 meet-up thread. We have meet-ups going at least in Dallas and LA that I know of, so hopefully, we'll be able to connect more Stony fans to go enjoy the movies together. We'll do the same thing for Homecoming when it gets closer to ticket-time for that one, as well.
If you are doing the RBB, how is it going? Artists, is it fun to work with a writer like that? I've generally heard very good things about the process. I only heard one writer ever say their artist didn't like the fic, though, God, that would suck.
I'd really like to set up another date/time to do a live chat. That was such fun! We should definitely do another livestream like @boop did for the MCU and AA. That was so much fun! And it was great to be able to pop in during the day as time allowed. I'd love to do fan videos one night and would like to watch the MCU movies again, since I missed that one. Maybe closer to IW or something.
Your amazing Stony Trumps Hate technical team has done wonders with the prep for that auction. I wish I could explain all the behind the scenes work that is going on, but it is going to be really good, and hopefully, something we can build on in future years.
Speaking of Trump, very glad to see that the healtcare "plan" put forth by the Repubicans was defeated. It was a terrible plan. They had seven years to come up with something better than Obamacare and instead, threw something together in a couple of weeks. Which, to the surprise of no one, looked like a plan thrown together in a couple of weeks for one of the most, ah, complicated issues out there.
Finally, I wanted to add my deep condolences to the victims of the attack in London. I lived in London as a student and walked that very bridge. It is just terrible.
Okay, have at it! This is the spot to talk about anything and everything!

I don't go looking for spoilers, but I don't avoid them either. Knowing what's going on doesn't lessen my enjoyment. I sometimes go looking for them with The Walking Dead because I want to know if I need to prepare for the death of characters I like.
And speaking of Walking Dead, I've spent my week bathing in the bitter tears of homophobes now that one of the new main characters came out as gay. Which wasn't a secret if you knew the comics, but it's always fun seeing the tv-only homophobes froth at the mouth.
Seeing Trump defeated was one of the high points of the week. As was, in a smaller way, a state election here in Germany this weekend. The resident right wing populist party unfortunately made it into parliament, but percentages were lower than expected and they weren't the party who managed to mobilise the biggest number of former non-voters. Small victories.
The attacks in London were terrible - a good friend of mine works very close to Westminster and I was concerned, but thankfully she wasn't in the area that day. At the same time, Europe seems pretty resigned to terror attacks and these non-coordinated attacks by a single individual don't seem to generate much upheaval anymore. My impression was that US media reports were different than from outlets over here.
Very very glad to hear your friend in London is safe! If we have to suffer terrorism, I want more of the Glasgow Airport kind where random heroes emerge to punch up the culprits.
I avoid spoilers because I love being surprised! I don't even watch the trailers as much as possible (especially for blockbusters because they tend to give so much away). I love being shocked and not knowing what might happen.
THAT PIC THO I LEGIT THOUGHT IT WAS AN INFINITY WARS BEHIND THE SCENES LMAO
I've been slogging along with my comics because of the sheer amount of multiverse Steves I put in the story. The middle of the comics is always more challenging. And I find writing and drawing Steve very difficult.
Trump is just the absolute worst.
If something like that pic happened in IW I'd forgive pretty much every sin they've committed in regard to Tony's and Steve's relationship before haha
I love how with the framing of it, Tony is clearly looking at Steve's chest. Like, no eye contact there at all. I feel ya, Tony!
I do love how Trump's "angry Tweeting" was probably the best fucking news we've had since he was elected.
AND NOW. Right now, I have officially turned in the last written assignment for the last seminar I'll be taking this academic year. I can't tell y'all how relieved I am and how DELIGHTED I am to be FREEEEEEEEE(DOOOOOOMMMM) of work this academic year. Now it's spring break, I'm so haaaaaaappy. I'm hoping (hoping hoping) to finish ch 10 of my fic in the next few days, but that sucker of a chapter is already ridiculous. What I thought was half done last week has grown to 10k and still has about 6k to go, minimum. I just need it to finiiiiiish already. I'm far too excited for writing projects to come.
HEY. I had a thought and I was wondering if y'all would weigh in on.... my one new years resolution this year was to write my Kings AU fic that's like ... I don't even want to admit to myself how big of a monster fic that's going to be. But, but but but. This is still in a nascent stage, but I was wondering (hoping!): would any of y'all want to play along? Mostly for writing fake fic snippets and/or social media comments/posts, that kind of thing. In no way more than like a 200 word commitment from anyone, if that! Whatever you wanted to. But basically I'm asking if you wanted to pretend you're living in a world in which Steve and Tony are royalty and you know. Single. And then maybe not so single. And rumors fly. IDK. (Of course for anyone who wants to join in, I'll give much more detail than what I've said above, but that's the general gist of it.)
I thought it could be a lot of fun, but before I even get my heart set on it or too excited I wanted to see if that's even something anyone would be interested in. I don't care at all if you've never written anything before or a lurker or anything (cause I know how that feels soooooo well) or if you've written dozens of incredible fic, but I just thought it would be fun to share in the idea and world a little. I may also be drunk on the idea of making the writing process somewhat interactive, so forgive me if it's a pie in the sky idea...
I'm so(!!) pumped for STH, it's going to be epiiiiiic! And, on a more personal note, I'm so excited to be freer and be able to participate a little more around here. School has been treacherous this quarter, so glad it's over. Big hugs to you all - I hope all of you have had a rewarding and restful weekend, and have a terrific week ahead!!
Congrats on your freedom! Enjoy some much deserved time off.
As for the Kings AU, that sounds fantastic! Feel free to hit me up if you need short pieces; the idea of contributing "fake news" to a larger piece would be really exciting. I can freelance as a gossipy, overly-invested tabloid columnist or something along those lines, as needed :)
YES. I'll get in touch, thank you! Hahaha something about how you described that makes me think of the reporter in Princess Diaries 2 and now I can't stop laughing (and may have to watch that movie ASAP).
Also, thank youuuu! I made myself a fabulous breakfast, and now I'm watching marathoning Psych with my little puppy dog and it is the most perfect Monday :D I hope you're having a great start to the week, too!
CONGRATS ON THE FREEDOM! One of the best feelings in the world, ahhh.
IT IS! IT IS AMAZING. I mean, in terms of school-feels, it is only second to "Surprise! Class is cancelled for today!" emails. I hope your week is starting off really great, too!
Totally up for another live-chat and/or livestream for EMH and AA and fanvids, the previous livestreams were the highlights of my weeks :D Sadly, spring break's over and it's back to class tomorrow. I haven't done much work at all, opps?
IW is shooting in Edinburgh right now, and I might be heading down there to sneak a peek in two weeks! Probably won't see much, but it'll be a fun trip regardless :) Good luck to everyone working on RBB, writers and artists alike, we're cheering you on! So totally pumped for STH :D
The London attack is heartbreaking and such a tragedy. The Republicans' failure to repeal Obamacare is something good to hold on to this week.
I always miss the livestreams and live chats 😢😢😢😢 my timezone just isn't open to that sorta thing. LET US KNOW HOW IW LOOKS 💖
We're on the same time zone, I think? GMT+8? I managed to join in during the live chat, but I had to wake up early on a Sunday morning for that, hahaha! Hope you can join one of the chats/streams sometime :)
Waking up early on a sunday.... Yikes HAHAHAHA
I'm the same as you with spoilers, sabre. I remember it getting way too spoilery for Cap 2, and at one point, I just stopped watching all the new teasers they were coming out with because I wanted to feel like I was watching something fresh when I went into the theater, you know? Nowadays, I try to watch one or two trailers and then maybe a short teaser or two, but I generally avoid TV spots because, again, they end up giving too much information.
As someone who hates being spoiled, I pretty much try to block every single tag/hashtag possible and temporarily unfollow people (and once it gets to the release date, I take a much more active approach to avoiding spoilers until I get to watch the thing myself)...I always get upset when people don't tag stuff lol.
A live chat would be fun! Speaking of chats, are we also doing a writer (writer/artist?) chat? I don't remember if we were going to try to make that a monthly thing or if there isn't a set schedule to them.
Very excited for STH! I'm planning on contributing, and hopefully I'll be able to bid on something as well.
Also excited for the Aluminum Anthology! :)
Totally down for another livechat/marathon dealio! Except that'll probably have to come in May if I'm the one streaming since I'm in thesis hell for the entirety of April o|-<
Spoilers don't bother me, per se. Half the fun is seeing the way the actors/director interpret the plot. That being said, the constant frenzy of "what ifs" can sometimes get annoying, and it's easier to tune out after a while.
RBB is going GREAT! I've gotten incredibly lucky with my partner, who is both helping to craft the plot and providing much-needed feedback/encouragement. She's also creating original artwork as the story progresses, which blows my mind. I can't wait until we get to post the cover art! The only issue I'm having is writing to a timeline. I've never written a fic this long before (over 20K now), and I want to make sure that it's good to go by the cut-off date. Do any more experienced writers have advice about writing to a deadline?
The process you're sharing with your artist & partner sounds so exciting!! Fingers crossed that all your inspiration comes on time so you can meet your deadline <3
I try to avoid spoilers as much as possible, unless the spoilers involve potential heart break for me (such as major character death, or a notp becoming cannon) in which case I would like to be forewarned. I would love another livestream or chat, I have missed talking to other Stony fans as the last week has been pretty quiet on that front.
I saw Logan recently and I enjoyed it a lot. Haven't seen BatB though, I don't know if I want to. Otherwise I have had a pretty quiet week. I missed a screening of La La Land at my insti and I had really wanted to watch it to see what all the fuss is about. Oh well. Meanwhile my adviser just started me on a new project that is taking up a lot of my time. God, please let me graduate!!
The London attack was terrible. I don't know, it feels like terrible things seem to keep happening and happening and the fear that is spreading through out the world is never going to end.
I feel what you mean on 'spoilers but not too many'. For GotG2 for instance, I've watched all the main trailers and know synopses and basic plot points but I've kinda kept away from the zillion tv spots they've been releasing because I don't need to be spoiled on any more fun moments. This much, and no more XP It was the same thing with Logan. I just reach saturation point with spoilers and then shut stuff off, though sometimes that doesn't help (looking at you, Game of Thrones -glowers- )
I'm still tuned in to all the Justice League stuff though. The new trailer is....nice enough, I guess? While the JL uniting is always going to be exciting to me, I wish I'd get a bit more than just that. And why oh why is Cyborg not more Teen-Titan like instead of remotely resembling an Iron Man knock off.
Miracle of miracles, apparently someone in the community is actually living in Melbourne though we haven't been able to discuss meet-ups yet XD
I'm kinda mopey I didn't get to sign up for the RBB, though I suppose a more accurate choice of words would be, 'chose not to'. Mostly because I have too many WIP's as it is, and a thousand more ideas constantly buzzing around my head. I've never had artwork done for my fic before though, nor have I collaborated with anyone else in such a fashion, it sounds rather nice <3
So excited for Stony Trumps Hate! The amazing things that fandom can achieve, honestly. April 30 can't come here soon enough- WIP's or not, there's no way I'm not signing up for this. And bidding on a dozen more, hopefully.
Adding London to the evergrowing list of places that have been besieged by terror....I don't know, guys. I don't know if I have anything to say that hasn't been said before, like how incredibly sad and tired this makes me. And you just know politicians are going to jump on events like these as excuses to marginalise other communities even more.
...also, it's five thirty am on this side of the world right now, I've been awake all night trying to complete my relational database assignment and the world is looking very fuzzy right now. Gah.
I don't know why, I just couldn't get excited about Justice League. It wasn't piquing my interest not like Wonder Woman did. I have no idea why but the trailer just sort of felt cheesy to me minus certain moments.
Same here, and I loved the Justice League as a kid and was excited about the teaser they released last year. I think it's because of how heavily saturated the trailer was with CGI? It gave off that generic, and most often terrible, blockbuster action movie feeling. And yes, some of the parts were really cheesy to me. :/ I'm hoping for the best, though, because as I said, I loved the JL as a kid, and it would be great to see them on the big screen.
Same! I actually like DC and was a fan before I got into Marvel but I only have enthusiasm for Wonder woman. I think it's cos Suicide Squad and BvS were so awful now I dread what they might do to beloved characters.
I'm worried about WW. I want it to be good, but...ugh. WW was the first superhero I ever really loved. I remember pretending to be her as a child. Used to get up on Saturday mornings to watch the cartoon. Anyway, yeah, I'm just not sold on this version of WW, though we have only gotten a few glimpses. We'll see. Here's hoping, though!
I can understand why a person who is familiar with her might be worried. WW was never a big part of my life aside from the justice league cartoons. That probably makes it easier for me. But I am really invested in this movie turning out good.
Damn, that pic. Damn.
I'm not actively looking for spoilers, but yes, I need to know everything, always. I might regret learning something or I might end up wishing I could unsee certain things, but my default state is usually Give me all the information, give it to me now.
Watching fan videos would be cool. I usually don't go looking for them on my own, but there are such wonderful works out there!
I heard about the healthcare plan, and truly, what a good thing that they failed. That penchant for ruining everything that was better than anything they can come up with is infuriating. And yes, what happened in London is just so awful.
Looking forward to STH and SA3!
