A personal blog where I geek out basically.
Children Who Chase Lost Voices
I just watched Children Who Chase Lost Voices. The beginning was a lot better than the second half TBH. I thought the scenery was nice, as per usual with a lot of Shinkai's works. Around 3/4ths of the movie I kinda stopped paying attention though. I was doing something else and when I looked back up again, I was completely lost?
I didn't think I missed out much, so I ended up looking up what happened (I didn't feel like rewinding it just to see what I missed). The part this happened was when Asuna (the girl?) was sleeping and these creatures started coming up to her. I looked down and the next second she was in a completely different location and nowhere near Mimi and the adult (can't remember his name) she was travelling with. Um, I read too much and found out the ending. I stopped it midway because the rest of the plot seemed super depressing. Ended up finishing it up this morning.
It got pretty dry after I knew what was going to happen, I probably shouldn't have spoiled it but I'm not sure if I would've lost interest even if I didn't look up the plot. Mimi's death was random? I knew it was going to happen but it was pretty disappointing, if he (or she?) died fighting something I would've been okay with that but it just randomly died a few hours after Asuna leaves it.
Also, while I get the whole premise is supposed to be about death, how come the narrative focused exclusively on the old dude's dead wife? At that point, Asuna's lost more people than him and for some reason it's just completely ignored because this old dude's sad about his wife that died ten years ago? Yeah, I'm starting to really dislike the bitter old dude narrative that's in every single anime I've watched this year. ('Course this is my first foray in about ten to twelve years now. I have no idea if this is a new thing or if it's been there for a while.)
It was really random when the older guy just abandoned Asuna though. He just up and ditched her and she randomly went to the river, WTF?
I'm completely lost on how this underground world works though. The people who live there can die too? Where do they go? Is it the same place that people in the surface go too? Also what happened with the dude that Asuna was crushing on? He got banished right? So is he going to just randomly travel with the older guy now? Also, how come the older guy just stayed in Agartha? How is that moving on from his dead wife? He just refused to go back to his own world. What about the clavis Asuna had, how did her dad get ahold of it?
