What's your favorite devastating page or panel?
My favorite is from Allison Bechdel's autobiography about her relationship with her mother, Are You My Mother.
For context, that's Allison as a young girl, with her mother, who was usually emotionally detached, asking if her daughter loves her. It's such a brilliant use of the medium that has so many layers. It's one of the only full page panels in the book, giving it extra impact since it has room to breathe. There's three streams of dialogue (the tv, the conversation, the captions), with a high camera angel to give the impression that the child has the power in this instance, and to make the reader feel off kilter. The expression on Allison's face is deadpan, she doesn't know how to react to such an alien situation. All of it combines to just...wreck me. That poor kid.

Oh I need to find my copy of "Dark Empire!" (Star Wars). It's an amazing scene in which we see what might be a truly dark side to Luke Skywalker. I know it's not cannon anymore but I still think it was a great novel!
Also, despite it being a technically "hopeful" panel, the famous art of Superman saving a young goth from jumping gets me every time. Every time!
