What makes a successful online community? How can we design better ones? What works about Imzy/Twitter/Facebook? Why?

Our survey of 12,000 commenters says...

  • design

It may not come as a surprise to the esteemed members of this group that commenters on news sites like to talk to people, and they wish that journalists would talk with them more.

We surveyed commenters across 20 news sites, and there are some interesting findings in there:

What do you think about the study?

Receiving messages...

I do think it would be helpful if journalists also participated but I imagine that would be difficult to really accomplish.

  • greenieJan 17 at 4:57 PM

Yeah it's nice having like, actual data to back up anecdotal stuff :)

  • greenieJan 17 at 4:58 PM

Also, interesting that @Andrew_Coral decided to try out the live chat feature for this thread 😄

  • weffeyJan 17 at 4:58 PM

I was thinking the same @Jessica and @greenie. What I have to offer is anecdotal.

  • weffeyJan 17 at 5:00 PM

Overall, I don't think we've seen abuse of our anonymous functionality on Imzy, and there's been good conversations in the Anonymous only communities he have here

  • DanJan 17 at 5:00 PM

Wow, some really cool stuff in this study ...

  • DanJan 17 at 5:01 PM

I think ultimately a reader would like a connection to the writer in some way and would like to have a dialog/conversation with them. I know at reddit some of my favorite AMAs were with journalists, because you never realize how much work goes into a few page article

  • DanJan 17 at 5:02 PM

Unfortunately most of the journalists I know hate reading comments and aren't very excited to revisit their article after they've gone through the editorial process.

  • KaelaJan 17 at 5:03 PM

I love that there wasn't actually a real difference between pseudonymous and real-name comments. That's something I've believed for a long time—that it's more about the moderation, culture, and other tools—but haven't really had firm evidence of.

  • JessicaJan 17 at 5:04 PM

I agree with Weffey about anon, as well. There have been a handful of users who tried to abuse it but the communities seem pretty dedicated to keeping it civil and don't allow it to get out of control.

  • FlamboyantOstrichJan 17 at 5:04 PM

yeah i think a lot of people have been trained with the "never read the comments" philosophy. Though some of that is probably because they're tired/afraid of abuse they might receive in the comments sections.

  • KaelaJan 17 at 5:04 PM

I feel like anyone who's ever engaged in an article or story generally has questions, and of course you want those questions answered, so it would always be better to be able to have that person around. That's why I like community platforms that are designed more around interacting than one-way microphones.

  • KaelaJan 17 at 5:05 PM

But it's really hard when things do get out of hand or you don't manage things well, then you just want to stay out of the comments completely and hide.

  • KaelaJan 17 at 5:05 PM

I read something recently about experts never feeling like they can chime in online (especially if it's attached to their real-life professional identity) because there's just so much risk of participating online, so it's not worth it

  • KaelaJan 17 at 5:06 PM

Which is really just sad. We could have so much more knowledge shared, but we're censoring each other and keeping away the people we want to learn from

  • KaelaJan 17 at 5:08 PM

Oh, found the link; it's a decent read: http://foundersatwork.posthaven.com/the-sound-of-silence

  • greenieJan 17 at 5:09 PM

That post sounded to me like she was saying that paul graham was afraid to talk

  • greenieJan 17 at 5:11 PM

"the most successful people in an industry tend to have some of the most valuable insights about it. So you lose a lot when they are silenced. "

like, is she saying that criticism of paul graham silences him?

  • JessicaJan 17 at 5:11 PM

    Yes, Greenie

  • greenieJan 17 at 5:11 PM

and if youre literally one of the most successful people in the tech industry like... idk

  • JessicaJan 17 at 5:11 PM

    That post was rough, imo.

  • greenieJan 17 at 5:12 PM

but yeah its interesting that users didnt notice a difference with anon comments, in the research

  • greenieJan 17 at 5:12 PM

i sorta woulda expected people to report that they were more hostile, even if it wasnt the case?

  • greenieJan 17 at 5:13 PM

because we're so used to like, that being part of the narrative

  • greenieJan 17 at 5:13 PM

so we repeat it without really thinking
