Raffles-The First Step- E01 Part 1
No copyright infringement intended. All rights belong to Yorkshire Television. Uploaded for entertainment purposes only. The adventures of the gentleman thief. Enjoy. Raffles meets Bunny, his old school pal for the first time after many years because Bunny has fallen onto hard times. Raffles agrees to help him, by taking Bunny along to commit a burglary.
Hey again, everyone! If you like the sound of Raffles but would rather watch something than read it, I have a rec for you.
There was a series of Raffles filmed in 1977, starring the excellent character actor Anthony Valentine, which is very faithful to the original stories overall, actually fleshing out the opening story better than the print version, imo.
It is possibly a bit more lighthearted than the books, and the 70s camp could be a deal breaker for you, but for me this series is the visual equivalent of comfort food, as Valentine's dash and Strauli's befuddlement are so fun to watch.
Above is the link to the first part of the first episode (the rest are also available on YouTube), and if anyone has any experience with Raffles in visual media, I'd love to hear it in the comments!

I remember this series on TV, a million years ago. I loved it for its stylish (for the time) take on the stories, the slightly stilted manners, and the absolute polish of Raffles himself. Raffles is darker in the books; in fact the books present the shadowy underbelly of the times much better, I think, but none the less the contrast between Raffles' and Bunny's white-tie gentlemen's club life and their secret life of crime is done very nicely.
Yeah, camp was a 1970s stylistic thing. That was the decade that gave us Roger Moore's Bond, which was about as camp as you can get, and what was that thing, Department S - Peter Wyngarde with a droopy moustache and too much eyeliner.
Man, it doesn't matter how many stories I read about boys' schools. "I was your fag at school" never fails to crack me up.
Oh my god, Bunny is so eager in this. It's adorable.
