What is your way of interacting with a fandom

In other words do you just watch a show, and interact with other fans or do you write fan art anf fan fiction.

I write fic, and beta. I chat with other people a bit, although until Imzy turned up it was getting hard to find a place to chat in. LJ had become pretty inactive as a chat-place in my main fandoms and I never did get the hang of Tumblr. Mostly I lurk, reading other people's fic, although I do like to leave a comment when I can.

  • PriyajsridharOct 30, 2016 at 7:47 PM

    All of the above!

  • WillowyOct 27, 2016 at 8:00 PM

Can we put "all of the above"? Hi everyone, new to the site and this is my first post. waves

  • ArmonahOct 27, 2016 at 12:54 PM

I checked off fanart, but mostly I'm a bit of a lurker.

  • unholyexhalationOct 26, 2016 at 5:28 AM

i tend to avoid fandom interactions besides commenting on fic/meta/art i liked and posting my own stuff. and answering comments i guess.

i'll talk privately with personal friends/acquaintances about it, but engaging with any one fandom at large has been overwhelming for me in the past, and i've always regretted having done it.

i guess that's why i'm glad to be starting imzy while it's relatively smaller-- it'll be less daunting to adjust to while seeing what parts of it i enjoy participating in.

  • froggydarrenOct 26, 2016 at 2:35 AM

I was missing an "all of the above" option here. Because I've done all three in some fandoms, and then only some in others. That said, lately I'm more observing fandoms with the occasional contribution, so "other" seemed like the best choice.

  • FranzeskaOct 26, 2016 at 12:42 AM

I vid more than I do anything else, but all of the above, I suppose. Fic is definitely central to how I think about my fannishness in a way that art is not. Interaction can be, but I'll burble meta thoughts at anyone in range, so it has to be a particular kind of interaction centered around fanworks for it to be distinct from just generally discussing media with nerds.

  • dkwilliamsOct 25, 2016 at 9:01 PM

For me, it depends. While I prefer to write fanfic, I can't just write about any character or any fandom. I have to get to know it, get to know the characters, and then if I have fallen in love with them in the right way, then I can write. It's why I am usually late to every fandom party. (Didn't start writing X-Files till the 1st movie came out, didn't write Highlander till the 5th season, didn't write Sherlock BBC until just at the start of Series 2 although I wrote ACD Holmes from about 5th grade onward.) I guess you could say that I'm a demisexual when it comes to my fandoms.

Oh, and I also vid, about as much as I write, it just takes longer.

I went with interaction because, despite sometimes writing and roleplaying, it's nothing compared to the immense chatlogs I have with my fandom friends. I also was more of a structure person in the past, being the admin of a 1000+ members panfandom art forum, but it got too tiring ^^"

  • DorkvaniaOct 25, 2016 at 2:27 PM

I am typically a structure person. I've done tracking of kink memes so there is a good links list to navigate to the actual stories, running events and challenges online and IRL, knowing how to find things, modding coms, making masterposts, regular news round ups, interviews at cons, con reports and con photography.

I'd talked lore, I've ficced, I try to art, but what I am good at is the structure side of fandom. Though I've cut way back on how much of that I will do anymore.

    • kaesariaOct 25, 2016 at 3:49 PM

THANK YOU for being a structure person and helping make all of our fandom lives immeasurably smoother. :))

      • DorkvaniaOct 25, 2016 at 4:46 PM

Thanks :) It's not a role people usually appreciate. I've even had my work copy/pasted by other fans or even companies without credit and had no one care. So any thanks is very loved.

    • unholyexhalationOct 26, 2016 at 5:35 AM

that's a lot of hats to have worn! i feel sympathetically tired just reading that list, but a lot of passion bleeds through it at the same time.

i'm thankful for your categorically often-forgotten-about structural contributions that have allowed your fandoms to persist, but i'm also glad you've found a balance that's less overwhelming.

      • DorkvaniaOct 26, 2016 at 3:19 PM

Aw, thank you :) It's easy to slip into old habits just because logistical stuff is easy for me, but I really need to keep my focus on m own creative stuffs.

  • taicharaOct 25, 2016 at 2:24 PM

It depends on the fandom, really? There's some I may write for, others that I'll chew on the worldbuilding incessantly for; some I chat about, some I'm in a fandom of one for.

Some of my oldest (running on many decades) fandoms I've had very little external fannish output for that anyone would recognize, but they're still nearest and dearest fandoms.

    • unholyexhalationOct 26, 2016 at 5:31 AM

this is a nuanced and honest variety of answer that i didn't consider. now that you've said it i can see that's basically the same for me-- it varies wildly based on the fandom and my subjective experience for it.

      • taicharaOct 26, 2016 at 5:37 AM

Different things require different reactions, really --

  • vampOct 25, 2016 at 1:53 PMΔ

I said 'fanfiction' but I probably could have done with an 'all of the above' button. Wait. Do gifs count as fanart? That's about as arty as I get. I might toss a tweet or blog post into the void, see if anyone else I know is fanning over the same thing. As far as writing goes, I do a hell of a lot of throwaway fic in a new fandom before I ever post anything. Most of it is for self-indulgent purposes.

ETA: Actually the first thing I do is ficdive. I don't know why that didn't occur to me. Read all the available fic in whatever pairing has brainwormed me, comment and flail etc. So it's actually interaction, and I accidentally lied in my vote. Woops.

  • MagessOct 25, 2016 at 12:55 PM

I went with Fanfiction for this, because if I'm really into something, you can tell because I've written fic for it.

But I feel like most of my time is actually spent just talking to people on tumblr or reblogging things or making commentary. So I think it's actually both. Although some of that doesn't always count as interaction, more like reaction because the person never answers you.

  • skyhopedangoOct 25, 2016 at 12:44 PM

I chose "interaction", although for me it's a fairly low-key level, especially as more and more of my fandoms seem to be the most active on Twitter, of all places, and I just can't keep up with that shit.

To be honest I don't really mind Tumblr on this front. I've never gotten a hang of making fandom friends and friending and whatnot (and just because I enjoy someone's posts on Topic X doesn't mean I want to read everything they post), so with personal blogs and journals I tend to fail and end up posting into the void. Tumblr has this nice filter system meaning I can follow tags and others interested in the same stuff can see my posts in those tags, and I guess we can talk if we want to. (I mean there's a lot of things that Tumblr is doing wrong but this particular aspect works out fine for me.)

  • nomadicwriterOct 25, 2016 at 11:35 AM

These days I mostly just toss my fic into the void up on an archive and hope that someone might want to chat about the canon in the comments. I used to discuss canon and talk meta on LJ comms and forums like TWoP, but a combination of most of my fandoms being small and/or dead and the spaces for that kind of discussion drying up means I don't get to do that very often any more.

I'm hoping that Imzy will be a good place for bringing that kind of discussion back, but it's difficult at the moment because the comms are either for fandoms I'm still fond of but haven't been active in for years, or new fandoms that I'm not into. I'm enjoying the conversation in multi-fandom spaces like here and /fanfic_tropes, but there just aren't enough people around yet to find other people who are being fannishly active about my old or obscure faves. Hopefully it will all keep growing, especially once we're out of beta. (Even quiet as it is at the moment, I've definitely been a ton more active in fandom comms on Imzy than I've been for years!)

    • AnneLiSlashFanOct 25, 2016 at 2:16 PM

Agreed very much on the being more active in fandom comms on Imzy than I've been for years!

I haven't had time to be active in imzy communities that I don't happen to lead yet, though, trying to keep those active. I'm kinda hoping I will find a new fandom obsession that I can follow a bit "from the start" on imzy, if that makes any sense?

Other than that I mostly read (or write) fanfiction.

    • unholyexhalationOct 26, 2016 at 5:39 AM

this is a lot of...well, i have mixed feelings, and this reflects some of them.

the death of lj meant the death of small fandom connection. participation in subcommunities involving informed consent and clear guidelines that are politely enforced is vital. so is letting people choose their own niche's rules.

i'm hoping to see things get less scary again after the flood or drought nature of tumblr and twitter fandoms. i'm easily overwhelmed and like clear community rules that i can either abide by, or peaceably stay out of the community over.

  • kslangleyOct 25, 2016 at 11:24 AM

Well, of those choices, I will go with interaction. But my interaction with fandom includes communicating with fellow fans, reading/enjoying fan fiction and fan art, and watching/reading the media source product.
