That's what's wrong with that adaptation of Tom Wolfe's "The Bonfire of the Vanities." By Mr. De Palma's standards, it's bloodless in every way. Even real time feels too slow. In his prime, which was the paranoid Nixon '70s, the excessive Reagan '80s and just a touch beyond, Mr. De Palma made thrillers that thrilled.

I haven't been familiar with this director, but I've seen some of these movies and hadn't even realized they were connected.
I'm also fascinated by what this article had to say about the sexuality in these films. I don't have any conclusions to add--I've got to mull it over for a bit first. It's just interesting.
