Before You Grow

Before You Grow

Startups are defined by growth, but growth isn't step one in building a great company. If you focus on trying to grow before you make a product people love, you are unlikely to succeed. We've said this before, but it's worth repeating-many founders hurt their companies by focusing on growth too soon.

Airbnb slogged for 1000 days before discovering how to make their product loved.

I think this is something important to remember. Sometimes it can take a long time with a lot of hard work. People expect to go "we made it!" and now it's good and then they can focus on growing, or they work on it for the first year and then all they have to grow after that. But sometimes building your product is a long process, and you have to keep pushing that hard the entire time.

Surely it is good to be sure that such a thing can work, to avoid burning all available resources and the self-confidence. But also too much caution can prevent takeoff. You must have to have a brilliant mind, quickly intuit what is the next right move. As usual...

Surely, a ton has to come together just right. That's why it's so hard (and fun).
