I've never heard most of these myths, and I research heat stress information every summer for company safety talks. There's another important distinction: Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat stress. It's a medical emergency in which body temperature, dehydration, and other harmful effects have progressed to the point where death is imminent without prompt medical attention.

Heat exhaustion is what most people are referring to when they talk about heat stroke. That's when you're experiencing negative effects from dehydration and elevated body temperature, but you're life is not yet in danger. Rehydration and rest in a cool environment will ameliorate heat exhaustion, but not heat stroke.

Heat stress is a general term for that various stages that lead up to heat stroke.
