    Peanuts aren't nuts?!?!

    • fluffywhitethingAug 04, 2016 at 12:11 PM

Yes and no. Botanically they're not nuts. They're legumes like peas and lentils. They could also be considered an oil crop like olives. By botanical definition a nut is a fruit whose ovary wall is very hard at maturity. So walnuts, almonds, pecans, etc...

However, we speak English, and we use words the way we use words. And most of the time when someone is talking about a peanut they're talking about consuming it in some form or another. And peanuts in food are used the same way nuts are used. So it's perfectly acceptable to consider it a nut the same way you'd consider a cashew a nut.

Same with tomatoes being called a fruit. Yes, botanically they're a fruit. So are avocados. So are a LOT of thing we eat as vegetables. Cucumbers, zucchini, peppers... the list goes on. But again, when we're talking about these things in the real world and not in a science lab, we're talking about how we eat them, not how they act botanically. You wouldn't take a bowl of tomatoes, peppers, okra, zucchini, cucumbers, and avocado to someone's house and say that you brought fruit salad. And if someone said that they're allergic to nuts you wouldn't give them a peanut butter sandwich because peanuts aren't a nut.

(Though if someone said they're allergic to tree nuts but peanuts are fine, that's a different story.)

Culinarily, they're nuts, but biologically they're legumes, the same category as peas and most beans.

I think they got a lot of these answers by wording the questions to trick people. Asking "Is coffee made from beans?" is different from asking "Are coffee beans really beans?"

They mate with one couple for the whole season but will probably mate with another penguin the following year as the urgent need for breeding will make them avoid waiting for the same couple.

I'm pretty sure that this is saying that Emperor Penguins have a new threesome every year.

    Mars is red

"The red colour we see in images of Mars is just the result of iron rusting." what???

    • fluffywhitethingAug 04, 2016 at 12:12 PM

It's not red, it just looks red. It's like, you're not tired, you just FEEL like you're tired.

Okay all they're doing here is picking nits with language. For instance Coffee is made from a bean. This is not a misconception. It's called a Coffee bean. Is that bean also a seed? Yes. All beans are seeds but not all seeds are beans.
