Against Design Fads: Why Do We Use Materials That Are Inappropriate For Their Application?

Designers are inherently creative. And with creativity comes a thirst for knowledge and experimentation. We think: "How can we make this object better? How many ways are there to solve this problem and which one is better? What can I do with this material to push it further?"

I do question some "modern" design and their practicality. My old Sansa MP3 player has a spinning "tactile" dial that I can easily control and tell how far I want to turn the dial. More modern incantations of this player have replaced the dial with "touch" controls or push-button controls which are inferior to the dial. I'm guessing that with less moving parts there's less defects. So...

I'm reminded of the movie "Sleeper" where Woody Allen tries (and fails) to sit down on this "modern" chair that was only a twisted up pole. Nice scene about current man vs. modern design.
