Canada's oldest Muslim community finds solidarity in Edmonton
Sun pours through tall, rounded windows and off the gleaming hardwood planks inside Canada's first mosque. Rugs where immigrants kneeled while they said their daily prayers nearly a century ago cover the floors. The country's first house of worship for Muslims was not established in a major centre such as Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver.

I had no idea we had Canada's first mosque.
I didn't know that either. Very cool.
They spoke about us having the oldest mosque in Canada at the vigil for Québec on Monday. Apparently, Calgary has the largest mosque in Canada and Iowa has America's oldest, so I guess something draws the Prophet's faithful to the Prairies.
Yeah, it was Calgary having the largest mosque that I hadn't previously been aware of. That's actually really surprising, given how many Muslims (and separate Muslim communities) there are in Toronto!
The Make Something Edmonton crew started touting that a couple of years back, actually (in a list of ways that the city has historically been a great place to do things that people think you can't actually do), and the mayor picked up on it and has been using it in speeches since then.
