I SAW STRANGER THINGS AND I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS
(The original series on Netflix that adheres to 80's storytelling tropes and uses a lot of the cinematography.)
One of the scenes near the end has the kid characters playing D&D, and at the end of the ten hour campaign the players complain to the Dungeon Master that it was too short, and that a bunch of dangling threads were never tied up.
This is a hint.
There's a few things they blatantly drop in the last few minutes I feel just to leave room for a sequel. The Sheriff gets picked up by some Men In Black, but doesn't seem to suffer from it... me and the BF speculated he was FBI or CIA himself, and not a 'big city cop' as his underlings said. He knew how to search a room for a wire, which is really more of a spy skill set thing instead of something a cop would just ~know. Methinks he was undercover, from a section of the gov't that wanted to shut down this last, lingering remnant of the MKULTRA program.
Also I am a tad frustrated he didn't get a Cosmic Punishment for selling out El! He seems to make up with her, or something, since he leaves Christmas party food in a wooden box in the woods for her (it was hinted it was her b/c of the Eggos.) And oh yeah, that. So apparently El didn't dissolve into the ether with the Upside Down Monster...? She did say goodbye to Main Character Kid, so idk, maybe she faked her death on purpose? Mr. Creeper got dead via Upside Down Monster, and no one else was really pushing to find her again, might be a good time to drop off the map.
Will, the missing kid, barfs up an Upside Down slug like the one that was in this throat while he was lost, and his surroundings flicker to the Upside Down... Maybe he has a little bit of a fairlyland thing going on? He spent To Long in the Upside Down? I wonder how he and El would interact, honestly. Like, if they both have powers now or something.
Speaking of El, she got her powers from being a fetus while her mom spent spent time high as a kite in a sensory deprivation tank. rolls eyes I'll write it off as an 80's thing, but P-Leaze.
And!!! Then!!! Nancy still got together with Steve??? I mean, he spent the whole series becoming less and less of an asshole, but I never liked him, and Jonathon would be so much better for her!!! In the course of the show, Nancy and Jonathan have this conversation where Nancy doesn't repudiate marrying for money and position, but DEFINITELY denigrates it, and then she ends up with the Rich Asshole anyway??? Stab me.
I was so looking forward to their 3-member rpg party filling out, and it was there for like a shining split second (Steve-bat, Nancy-gun, Jonathon-lighter) and then Steve bugged out after they killed the monster... I mean, he pushed his way in the Byers' house through Nancy, so he STILL doesn't value her autonomy right up till then... Bleh. I really feel he needs to grovel convincingly to be forgiven entirely, and ideally to both of them.
[Okay so, the fic where Steve gets down on his knees to apologize sort of as a joke and then it snowballs into him giving Jonathon a blowjob with Nancy's hand in his hair directing the action. Y E S!]
...I liked the teenagers a lot, idk.
As a last point, Lucas was really cool. His role as sort of naysayer to El was actually a good fit. He's loyal to his friend group above all, and isn't as enthused by El's powers as their one friend who has significant emotional intelligence (the toothless one,) so he HAD to be the one to bring the group back to reality. Additionally... okay if I put my foot in this, please call me out... he's the black kid, right? He's probably had caution drilled into his head by his parents since he was tiny, and he just has a lot better knowledge about WHY being cautious can be beneficial. It just read as really true to me, and I still worry he picked up a concussion from El throwing him around. :(
A N Y W A Y S, if anyone else has FEELINGS, please feel free to talk to me!!! I need some to pick this apart with!!!

I haven't watched it yet, but between this one and all the people who like The Get Down and Jessica Jones (I know, dinosaur eras ago in tumblrland) I am thinking I will get a subscription to netflix and see if it's worth it.
I keep seeing people talk about The Get Down also, I think I might have to sit down this weekend and mainline it.
Netflix is worth it, I think. Cheaper than cable by A LOT, and they don't have everything, but they do have a lot of interesting things if you go digging. I've watched all the '30 for 30' documentaries about hockey so far. :P
LOL. Fandom will drag me into IRL Hockey this season, I'm sure.
Hahaha, well, we'll welcome you. Tell me if/when you get sucked in for good, I'll hook you up with some good folks.
I haven't watched it yet but I'm thinking about it. Netflix does a poetry good job most of the time with its original shows.
It's good! Not particularly good at representation (but nothing that will make you wince either), but it has a gripping story and a great atmosphere. I was really satisfied at the end.
