Communities That Seem Super Promising

  • General Discussion
  • General Fandom
  • Imzy
  • Recs
  • Community Pimp Post

Because I don't see how a /Yuletide can fail (even if there's nothing there right now!), and /Fandom_Dealer has one of the best written community explanation/rules posts I have ever seen.

What's catching your interest?

Well I'm excited about podfic, because that's a community that's filled with early adopters and people passionate about their thing. And fandom calendar has been super useful to me already, though obviously that one's less about discussions and things and more of a news feed.

    • AnonImplantationsBradyAug 18, 2016 at 10:10 AMΔ

How is the podfic thing working on Imzy? I know they have a podcast feature--is that useable for podfic?

      • AnonConjecturesKeithAug 18, 2016 at 10:14 AMΔ

I haven't tried it yet, and I suspect for longer podfics you'll have to split it up into multiple posts, but it looks like it could work!

      • AnonImplantationsBradyAug 18, 2016 at 10:26 AMΔ

Nifty! Are they hosting it? Or is it an external link kind of deal?

      • AnonConjecturesKeithAug 18, 2016 at 11:14 AM

There's no option to upload a file, only to paste the audio URL, so it looks like it's the latter.

  • AnonApplicantsCiaraAug 18, 2016 at 8:47 AMΔ

I'm not sure I entirely get Fandom Dealer, but I signed up for notifications so I can lurk until I do. (I never encountered its predecessor.)

I'm actually really liking the prompt comms /write_now and /100words and /worldbuilding is taking off nicely.

The original crack_van was essentially just an extremely well-organised, very big multi-fandom fic recs comm. People would choose a fandom they wanted to rec for and sign up to post a set number of recs for that fandom in a particular month. (Thus preventing a complete spammy free-for-all of everyone posting whenever or the comm becoming dominated by recs for megafandoms.) Anyone who signed up to rec a fandom that hadn't been featured on crack_van before would also post a fandom primer with an overview of the characters/premise/plot and links to where all the comms, fic archives and spaces with fan activity were at.

In the LJ era it was the place to go when you got into a new canon to find out where to look for the fandom and get a bunch of recs to start you off. Plus the primers were a good way to find out what this hot new fandom everyone keeps mentioning is actually about. I still go and check the tags there whenever I get into a new-to-me older fandom, and have found a lot of good stuff that way. I'm really hoping /Fandom_Dealer's going to take off and be the same sort of resource!

      • AnonApplicantsCiaraAug 18, 2016 at 9:40 AM

        thanks for explaining that!

      • AnonDareLorenAug 18, 2016 at 9:58 AMΔ

The primers at crack-van were great, it was always my first stop if I was getting into an established fandom, it usually linked to all the comms and let you know where to find all the places people were talking about your favourite characters and ships. The recs were very much hit and miss for me, but the resources were invaluable to newbies to a fandom.

      • AnonVersesDanielaAug 18, 2016 at 10:05 AM

Well, also, even if the recs themselves weren't great you could often find a lot of stuff by following the links to them and poking about, because they might be posted to an LJ community or archive with other relevant stuff or the author might have memories to go through. Which is all less of an issue nowadays when most recs are likely to be on AO3 (unless fic on Imzy takes off!), but I've still found it quite handy when I'm digging through older fandoms where the fic's scattered all over the place.

I still harbour a huge huge grudge against the person who wrote the Gundam Wing primer on crack_van, because they made Relena out to be this utterly inconsequential secondary or tertiary character. Relena! With like ten percent of all the episodes named for her specifically, and hugely influential story arcs spanning the entire show, and her face plastered all over the OP and ED and intermission sequences, and primary focus in both the first and last ever scenes of the show, and ARGH.

I saw a lot of Relena bashing back in the day, but somehow that post still sticks in my craw a particularly infuriating way.

/write_now looks really interesting, but what's up with the restricted posting? That's not the only fandom-related community I've run across with restricted posting. Are they afraid of trolls?

      • AnonImplantationsBradyAug 18, 2016 at 10:01 AMΔ

No, it's restricted because it's a panfandom/original writing prompt community. When communities like that get super popular, you can get a couple hundred comments/fills every day (Oh LJ how I miss your activity), so keeping it to the comments makes it so people can keep it on their follow list.

Fandom_Dealer is the slightly different--it's based off crack_van, which was made to be a pan-fandom-rec-sampler-plate instead of having a particular focus on a single fandom. Given the size of some fandoms, they did this by only allowing things like Harry Potter to have reccing months once or twice a year. The limited posting 1) made it exclusive and thus made reccers try a LOT harder to find the best things around 2) kept it panfandom 3) allowed for easier and better moderation. Crack_van had some of the best mods around.

      • AnonVersesDanielaAug 18, 2016 at 10:14 AM

I assume it's just to keep things organised so that only the mods can create top-level posts. (I don't think restricted posting affects comments, just posts. Though I could be wrong, since I haven't tried it and can't find it in the FAQ.)

      • AnonForegroundRoxanneAug 18, 2016 at 10:25 AM

Ah, it only applies to posts and not comments. That makes much more sense. Duh. Thanks for the explanation.

  • AnonDollarCaydenAug 18, 2016 at 6:59 PM

Haven't gotten a chance to check out /fandom_dealer, but knowing that it's modeled after crack-van is just so incredibly bittersweet.

One community that stands out to me (that hasn't been mentioned yet) is /multifandomdrabble. I'm super excited for sign-ups next week.

  • AnonSlideAvrilAug 18, 2016 at 11:30 AMΔ

I like the idea of /Fandom_Dealer, but it's really only seems to be for established fandoms, which doesn't help me. I wanted to be recced canons with fannish potential!

    • AnonVersesDanielaAug 18, 2016 at 12:05 PMΔ

There's probably room for a more general fandom and/or ship primer type comm for luring people into checking out new canons too, like the old ship_manifesto or the fandom-pimping posts they do at smallfandomfest. (I was thinking about something like this before, but it's the sort of thing that would require a fair bit of organisation from the mod and I don't really have the time to run it.)

      • AnonAlleyWesleyAug 18, 2016 at 2:05 PMΔ

If I could create another comm right now, I'd be interested in setting up a ship and fandom primer comm and trying to get it going. I've hit my comm-making limit right now, though. :(

      • AnonDollarCaydenAug 18, 2016 at 8:05 PM

I think someone already made one?

    • AnonConjecturesKeithAug 18, 2016 at 1:31 PM

Oooh. Someone (who is not me :P) should totally make this comm happen!

    • AnonAdverbCristinaAug 18, 2016 at 7:31 PMΔ

It doesn't have to be for big established fandoms. The point behind overviews was always to get new people interested, and a little birdy told me this new comm plans on having a Small Fandoms celebration month soon.

      • AnonEconomyAnnAug 18, 2016 at 8:45 PMΔ

That little birdy is definitely right. Just in time for Yuletide noms :D

      • AnonAdverbCristinaAug 18, 2016 at 8:48 PM

Or YT sign-ups, going by the posted calendar. We'll have to wait and see what they announce?

    • AnonEconomyAnnAug 18, 2016 at 10:12 PM

Rec obscure canons and start a trend! The only requirement is that there be five fanworks you're happy to rec for your canon, so you don't need a big fandom at all.
