Oh Hey, Wednesday Already?

  • General Discussion

The dorsal fin of a male orca is more than twice the size of that of a female. They can live into their nineties, and the oldest killer whale ever recorded was 103 years old. Their matrilineal social groups are some of the most stable of any animal. They are apex predators who'll eat pretty much anything that moves.

So what did you have for breakfast?

(Has everyone voted for their favorite dinosaur yet?)

For breakfast I had the cake I made yesterday!

(Cake vs cookies nonny decided on cake after bug-spraying the spider threatening the kitchen and waiting four hours.)

I really need to work on this exchange fic today, sigh.

    • AnonSwapDevinAug 31, 2016 at 1:51 AM

      You can do it!

      • AnonCombinationsPeytonAug 31, 2016 at 2:16 AM

        Thanks!

    • AnonCartridgesJanineAug 31, 2016 at 3:04 AM

(Triggered by memory of spider nonny suggests finding a solid object to flatten the menace with as a speedier solution!)

(Unfortunately, there's no way to protect oneself from spiders showing up on screen so I got freaked out at an extremely unnecessary camera shot in an anime :'( )

      • AnonCombinationsPeytonAug 31, 2016 at 6:16 AM

Aw, that sucks so much - I freak out at all spiders! This one was on the ceiling though, so I couldn't squish it very effectively until it, uh, dropped. I had to spray it very carefully from a distance, and then high-tailed it out of there!

    • AnonFloorsDinaAug 31, 2016 at 6:49 AM

      What kind of cake?

      • AnonCombinationsPeytonAug 31, 2016 at 7:03 AM

Chocolate! Because I am endlessly predictable.

  • AnonBlindfoldsEmeraldAug 31, 2016 at 3:48 AMΔ

My breakfast will include a cucumber/tomato/cheese sandwich if I get out of bed early enough.

If I don't, it'll be just cheese on bread.

ETA: I was not early enough to have time to slice cucumbers and tomatoes. :( But at least I remembered I had bought bananas so I am not starving.

  • AnonBlindfoldsEmeraldAug 31, 2016 at 9:01 AM

Meme is so bad for me.

I've been really enjoying the conversations but I just keep. checking. and it robs my sleep and makes me not productive. I may have to give up meme prime and stick to just imzy meme for now.

  • AnonRowerRickieAug 31, 2016 at 5:51 AM

My breakfast was, as ever, a granola bar. I am a creature of routine, and also of feeling weirdly nauseous if I try to eat anything too heavy first thing in the morning.

Also, today is my last day off before I gotta go back to work, and this time I am definitely going to finish that f#@king fic that I was hoping to have finished over the weekend. Only half a scene and the epilogue to go now! (I think. It keeps growing. It was meant to be a quick reaction thing to something that aired in July and now it's six weeks later, the fic's over 10k, and aargh.)

    • AnonKeysScarlettAug 31, 2016 at 6:05 AM

Good luck with the fic! I totally understand what you mean about the whole monster-fic-that-keeps-growing. Although it's never gotten to the point of 10k!

      • AnonRowerRickieAug 31, 2016 at 7:03 AM

I do write longfic! But this was not supposed to be one...

    • AnonRowerRickieAug 31, 2016 at 7:53 AM

Woo, another 450 words added, and now the main story is finally finished. Just the epilogue to go!

      But first, lunch.

      • AnonRowerRickieAug 31, 2016 at 12:39 PM

        It's done! Yaaaaay.

  • AnonFloorsDinaAug 31, 2016 at 6:49 AM

I will either have scrambled eggs and toast or a microwaved burrito, depending on how lazy I feel when I get around to it.

  • AnonButterMickeyAug 31, 2016 at 1:27 AM

That article is very thorough! I didn't know they were so social.

For breakfast I had organic chocolate cereals with lactose-free milk, artisan bread and home-made jam. It was delicious.

  • AnonDrinkJefferyAug 31, 2016 at 8:18 AMΔ

My breakfast was oatmeal with brown sugar. I can't wait until Friday, when I can buy milk to put in it. Butter and brown sugar is nice, but nothing beats oatmeal made with milk.

Also, I recently discovered you can make stovetop oatmeal in the microwave. It may not be a grandma approved method, but it is handy.

  • AnonKitesKeatonAug 31, 2016 at 10:27 AM

I don't breakfast. I wake up ten minutes before I have to be at work and have just enough time to brush my teeth and put on some clothes.

  • AnonDrainsLenaAug 31, 2016 at 2:03 AM

    I love these animal facts! Apparently orcas are not the longest living marine mammal, it's the bowhead whale, who can live for 200+ years! They're huge and oh jfc I just discovered that safe search doesn't exclude horrifying things like the results of whale hunting why ;_;

I had some porridge with plum jam, some cashews and hazelnuts for breakfast, thank you for asking :)

    • AnonKeysScarlettAug 31, 2016 at 3:26 AM

Wow, 200+ years is a really long time! And yeah, whale hunting is really disgusting. Goodluck washing your eyes, bro

And your porridge sounds very......... interesting? So was it sweet?

      • AnonDrainsLenaAug 31, 2016 at 4:31 AM

        I'm looking at kitten pictures to get those images outta my head ;_;

I'm very experimental with my porridge haha. It was sweet but not too much (on only put in two teaspoons), creamy and the nuts gave it some crunch.

      • AnonKeysScarlettAug 31, 2016 at 4:35 AM

        Here, I hope this helps.

Ooh, that sounds interesting. I never really liked sweet food though haha. Well, if you're interested, a popular way to have porridge where I'm from is to have it with salted eggs, salted fish and picked vegetables. Or maybe you know that already cause that feels pretty standard to me haha

      • AnonDrainsLenaAug 31, 2016 at 4:43 AM

OH MY GOOD WHAT A GOOD DOGGIE ♥♥♥♥♥

Interestingly enough, porridge is really uncommon here (Italy), I learned about it from meme.

I love both sweet and savory oatmeal, I'm definitely trying your recipe. Can I use overnight oatmeal or should I make it in the morning?

      • AnonKeysScarlettAug 31, 2016 at 6:03 AM

        Here have more cute animals!

And this is kinda weird for me haha. I'm south east asian so porridge is really normal. But we usually use rice? Like, I've never heard of using oatmel, so I wouldn't know how to answer your question hahaha

      • AnonDrainsLenaAug 31, 2016 at 6:22 AM

        So adorable! 😍

I haven't tried making porridge with rice, I shall try!
I use the words oatmeal and porridge interchangeably, sorry, I usually cook some oats in the morning or, more often, soak them in water overnight and heat them when I wake up.

      • AnonKeysScarlettAug 31, 2016 at 6:28 AM

wowww okay I'm, like, having major culture shock right now. I just looked at google images for porridge and everything was oat porridge. I had to type rice porridge to get what i normally see. I never knew it was that popular omg..... I have no idea if what I mentioned earlier would be nice cause I've only ever had rice porridge. The simple one is just having like 1 cup of rice to 6-8 cups of water. It tastes plain like that so people usually add things while it's cooking like chicken or peanuts. I'm sure it takes a lot more effort than oats though

      • AnonDrainsLenaAug 31, 2016 at 6:35 AM

Ha, I didn't know rice porridge was a thing instead! It looks paler than I'm used to but also delish.

Hm, I don't think soaking it overnight would work, I'll wait for a weekend when I have more time and give it a try :D :D

      • AnonKeysScarlettAug 31, 2016 at 6:43 AM

well, I guess I'd prefer the rice, since I'm the stereotypical asian who really loves rice hahaha. But, seriously though, if you don't cook it with anything it will be very plain. That's when you need the salted egg etc.

and good luck with trying it out i guess :D

      • AnonDrainsLenaAug 31, 2016 at 6:56 AM

I love rice too but I usually eat risotto for dinner. Trying it out for breakfast will be so cool! I'm going to try this recipe, I just have to remember to check if I'm missing some ingredients from the fridge.

      • AnonKeysScarlettAug 31, 2016 at 7:06 AM

that recipe looks great! hope everything works out when you try it!

      • AnonCoursesShirleyAug 31, 2016 at 7:37 AM

I think your Google results there were because English-speaking countries skew more towards oat (or sometimes corn or wheat) based porridges, and when savory rice porridges are cooked they're usually based on East/SE Asian recipes and referred to by their untranslated names like jook or congee or okayu. And the many sweet Western rice dishes that have a porridge-like consistency get called rice pudding rather than rice porridge since they're used as desserts, not part of a main meal.

(There's probably also a big regional difference in the names used for various porridges even in English-speaking countries. I'm a US nonny and while I recognize and understand the word, it's not something I'm used to hearing my friends/family actually use in everyday life? The default in my area is to use specific names for each type of porridge based on the type of grain it's made from - so oat porridge gets called oatmeal, wheat semolina porridge is farina or cream of wheat, corn porridge is hominy grits or cornmeal mush depending on how the corn is processed, and so on.)

      • AnonKeysScarlettAug 31, 2016 at 8:01 AM

Oh, wait, you're telling me congee is not actually an English word? (As I type this, I can see that there's the red squiggly line underneath the word congee, so it is in fact not an English word) Most people heredon't actually eat any porridge other than rice porridge and oats, which we just call porridge and oats respectively.

Thank you so much for informing me!

      • AnonCoursesShirleyAug 31, 2016 at 8:14 AM

Well, it's in Merriam-Webster and Oxford dictionaries, so I think it counts as a pretty well-established loan word in English by now, even if spellcheckers may hiccup on it! Apparently it's originally derived from a Tamil word for rice porridge.

      • AnonDrinkJefferyAug 31, 2016 at 8:28 AM

Here I was thinking grits and corn porridge were different foods.

Funny story: growing up I only ever heard the word porridge in books. I didn't know what it was. Some weird food made of wheat that is not quite cream of wheat? Oats processed with some unique method I'd never encountered?

I was twenty before I learned it was oatmeal. (Or cream of wheat, or - apparently - rice pudding. All of that is porridge?)

      • AnonCoursesShirleyAug 31, 2016 at 8:35 AMΔ

Here I was thinking grits and corn porridge were different foods.

Technically, they are! Grits are made from hominy, corn that's been through the nixtamalization process; cornmeal mush (or samp, which is made with bigger chunks of broken/ground dried corn) is made from untreated corn. They're both corn porridges but the alkaline treatment or lack thereof changes the texture, flavor and nutritional profile.

      • AnonDrinkJefferyAug 31, 2016 at 9:08 AM

        Food science! :D

Nonnie, if you have anymore porridge knowledge to lay down I am all ears.

      • AnonCoursesShirleyAug 31, 2016 at 10:05 AM

You can make it in a rice cooker!

      • AnonKeysScarlettAug 31, 2016 at 11:14 AM

Wait... how do you guys make porridge if not in a rice cooker?

      • AnonCoursesShirleyAug 31, 2016 at 11:27 AM

Stovetop, microwave, or just-add-boiling-water-to-bowl for the ultra-quick-cook "instant" types. There's also an increasingly popular trend for uncooked "overnight oats" where oats + toppings are soaked in the refrigerator overnight to be ready to eat in the morning.

(I'm from a regional US culture where rice cookers are omnipresent and rice is a daily staple, but that is...very much not the norm in most other parts of the country.)

      • AnonKeysScarlettAug 31, 2016 at 11:38 AM

Oh I see! I realize it makes sense since you guys call oats/etc porridge. My brain is wired to register porridge as rice porridge, so I was confused why you wouldn't cook it in a rice cooker hahaha

do you have any other porridge wisdom? :D

  • AnonCreditEwanAug 31, 2016 at 8:53 AM

I've been slacking off on breakfast lately and downing either a protein bar or a protein shake. Today was a shake morning. Only I had less almond milk left than I usually like to use so it was waterier than usual. Bluuuh.

Aside: I finally got a blender bottle and they're amazing. Would recommend. You can also just buy one of the blender balls and user it in a regular water bottle; the one I got was free-with-purchase of something I buy regularly anyway so ...

I was going to have a banana but work got in the way so now it's abandoned on my desk
