Why I am recommending this: Marlowe survived Deptford and is living in exile in the Italian states. He is attached to the household of a wealthy merchant in Venice, as a tutor to the merchant's children - an earnest, yearning boy and a self-confident, worldly girl.

He struggles with the language. He misses England. He longs to be called back into active service by the Queen. He thinks about Will Shakespeare, his erstwhile rival and one-night’s lover, his talent ready to blossom and the field open to him now that Marlowe is gone. And, at last, Kit finds a way to let go, and content himself with his life as it is.

Luna writes in her Notes: “I could have labelled this an AU, but better scholars than I am would dispute that!” This one’s a story for those who want to believe that Kit didn’t die in 1993, but escaped to live abroad and continue to write.
