Christopher Marlowe: Mighty Line by shinobi93 (Gen)

Pairing: Christopher Marlowe/Thomas Walsingham

Length: 810 words

Warnings: none

Site: AO3

Fandom/canon: A Dead Man in Deptford-Anthony Burgess; 16th Century CE RPF; Historical RPF

Why I am recommending this: We follow Kit Marlowe as he walks through the London streets, to meet a group of fellow writers in a pub.

The writer has imitated Anthony Burgess’ style from A Dead Man in Deptford, and does it well, playing with names, playing with words, weaving word-play around Marlowe’s scholarly mind and his secret life.

Shinobi93’s Marlowe has a blind spot, though: “Conclusions cannot harm him, not as he sees it … Kit Marlowe the magician does not think words will best him.” Wrong, Kit. And we, the readers, know what you did not.

Recommended for catching the style of canon and for drawing a portrait of a swaggering, intelligent, and arrogant Kit that we can love and fear for. A short snippet that packs a punch.
