Best ways to get comm activity?

  • Help Request
  • Idea Generation

I've had some luck with polls – loads of people vote, and a few even comment giving their reasons. What else have you had luck with? Do the top-level-posters come?

I just started "character spotlight " postd which seems to be working. I just try to feed content regularly in the hope someone will bite.

I'm actually in a terrible position to give modly advice on this, because both the comms I lead have a built-in generation.

As a member, though, I am way more likely to participate in a topical post --What got you into X? What would you like to see here?-- at the start, and then to make my own or link things once I get a feel that it would be of interest to others.

I've been doing theme weeks with daily posts, daily fic recs, and art/AMV recs when I have a bit of extra time. It took a while, but I've got about 5 to 10 people (out of 100) commenting and adding a bit of content.

Let's just say that the schedule post is my one true love.

Congrats on getting so many posts out!

Polls definitely generate activity! I've done a few simple knees like asking who their fav character is and asking for an explanation in the comments. It worked out pretty well.

I saw another comm create a post for discussing headcanons. It has a decent amount of comments, but died out. I was thinking maybe something like weekly posts to discuss different headcanons/au would be a good way to continuously keep the conversation going, but haven't tried it out myself yet. My worries is that it might get repetitive

I've got Character of the Week, Quote of the Week, and at least 2 other posts per week, one or more of which will be a poll. It's just that I'm running into a bit of trouble trying to come up with NEW AND UNIQUE polls and discussion posts, and could do with inspiration. :P

Hmm, what sort of headcanons posts would you recommend trying? A Character X Headcanons one, or "themed headcanons", or Mundane AUs, or ... ?

      • AnonTissuesSolomonSep 05, 2016 at 12:41 AM

YES! I actually planned a schedule to have a post every half of the week and I am getting to a roadblock because it's hard to keep it up! Finding new content gets hard after awhile (and honestly I just started mine a week ago and I'm already super worried!)

I was thinking of just throwing themed prompts like Soulmate AU and then people get to discuss how they think it would go for whichever pairing they liked. So maybe one day it's Soulmate AU, then next week it's Coffee Shop, then Road Trip, College, Harry Potter, Ice Hockey.... literally anything. I mean, I'd run out eventually, but it's going to be quite a long time lol

Thankfully I have a large enough cast herd that I can do "Favorite Person From This Subset of Characters" for, uh, about a year. And then I can chop the cast up differently and do more polls!

I've got a Canon Divergence AU post scheduled, but I'll see about doing other AU posts on Fridays. Thanks!

Oh that's lucky! I don't really have much of that, but I think I may be able to do something along those lines that I never thought of. Thanks!

        No problem and goodluck :D

The only thing that seems to spark anything is discussion stuff but I'm still mostly just posting for the content activity while I figure out what attracts people to comment. I have mostly lurkers in the comm.
